So, due to a myriad of reasons the boat did not get splashed until after July 4th. We went for our first family trip to Atlantique this past weekend. As circumstances would have it, I ran down to stock it up the night before we were to disembark. As I was leaving I popped in to use the head & discovered that it had no suction. I stepped out & heard the pump running continuously , ba-dump, ba-dump, etc, etc....
I thought I had used it when I did the shakedown run a few weeks earlier. All the symptoms were pointing me in the direction of the dreaded duckbills. I just couldn't understand how they went from fine to f*%ked with nothing solid flushed.
Well, I dug into the problem the next morning & found my answer.....

Those my friends are beads from a Damprid (little bucket style). You see, in the fall I usually put one on the floor of the head & one in the galley sink. Then I hang another 4 bag style ones around the cabin & in the closets. This past fall though, my mom passed on September 17th & I only made it down to the boat once to strip the bedding & remove the tops. I dropped off the Damprids as well. I called the marina & asked my buddy (who's my mechanic) to finish shutting it down for me when he winterizes the systems. Apparently they placed one of those Damprids on the counter in the head which spilled over when either they did their shakedown run or when I did mine. The head seat was up (in my defense only males were aboard up to this point) and a few of those damn little BB shaped things fell in. Then when I did my only flush of the season to that point, they found the duckbills. Moral of the story? Don't put those Damprids on the counter & put the toilet cover down!! I will only use the bag style Damprids from here on out! Cheers!

ugh. I just replaced ours I think the beginning of last season. Dock neighbor sold their open bow and just bought a 26' Wellcraft and said the head was filling up and smelled bad so I told him what he needed to do. A few days later mine started doing it again so I jinxed myself...lol. Just ordered a new one last night.

While on this subject...dock neighbor has a Wilcox Crittenden. Any idea what brand valve that might be? Or are they pretty much universal?

I was chatting with one of the guys at my marina this weekend. I was telling him that the fresh Ontario sweet corn was in at the gas station down the road (a farmer delivers fresh cut corn every morning). He doesn’t allow corn to be eaten by anyone on his boat. Says it can plug the duckbills. Hmmm. Its never been an issue for me. (I thought that you picture was corn LOL)

Flushing a bowl full of water wouldn't dislodge it?

The Duck bill gods have treated me well over the years. I remember only having to mess with the Vacu-flush system pump one time on my first boat, an 83 28 Sundancer I had in the early nineties. I had four boats since with Vacuflush systems and never had system problems, just was impressed with the bullet proof nature of the system and I was never militant about head use issues. I now have electric toilets on the 506 which seem to work just fine. I don't miss the noise of the pumps regenerating pressure either. I have had many boating friends though that seem to have recurrent issues with their duck bills or seals and stress over guests using their heads.

Unfortunately I could not generate any suction so flushing was impossible. I did see on another thread a hose attachment with a bladder collar that fills to seal it in an opening that is used for unclogging drains. That may have fixed it if I forced high pressure through it. I am definitely going to add that to my boating tool kit.

Todd, I thought splashing after July 4th was SOP for you!!!! Good to see you on the water, my friend.
