I was inspecting the hull of a boat under consideration for purchase. Boat had been taken out of the water for the season (in water since Spring servicing) and I found gear oil on the upper housing (see picture - green arrows on right). Could not investigate much further since it’s not my boat. I’m not that familiar with these drives so looking for general commentary on the issue… Thx!

BTW - I know what the leak is on the trim tab…

Looks like gear oil is leaking from where the lube monitor hose connects to a check valve so when you remove the drive the bottle does not drain out. Either the hose/fitting is leaking or sometimes oil leaks out when you remove / replace the drive. That would be the simple easy cheap explanation.

Kind of odd spots for leaks. Is it possible the outdrive was serviced during the winterization and it is just a sloppy clean up?
It is a vented case. Pressure test it if the purchase goes that far.

Thx - thought that might be it too? Turns out they pulled the drive and took it back to the shop for work after I reported the issue. I’m going to pursue the invoice details but didn’t want to get too involved going down that road if there was a simpler explanation?

BTW - it was a pretty good leak since the ground gravel was decently covered. Generally with spillage from servicing it’s ragged down and that does it!
