It would appear that I am going to have to Re-Bed the port lights on our 240 DA to get the water leaks stopped.
Has anyone used the Anti-Bond 2015 that Bomar recommends to loosen and remove 3M 5200?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.....

Cheers,

Jim

im doubting your port lights were put in with 5200 to begin with.

I have used it, you must follow the directions to the letter for it to come close to working.

If you don't believe they were bedded with 5200, whats your guess??

I am just going by what is posted on the Bomar site (See quote below) as I can't seem to get a straight answer out of MM or SeaRay....

"Removing Hatches and Portlights Bedded in Polyurethane Adhesives.

Many boat manufactures in the past and present use 3M 5200 or a similar polyurethane adhesive to install hatches and portlights. This is great for providing a good water tight seal but it makes removing the hatch or port very difficult without damaging the gelcoat.

There is a product on the market called Anti-Bond 2015 that may help. Anti-Bond 2015 that maybe the solution. Anti-Bond 2015 can be sprayed on 3M 5200 causing it to debond without any delamination of the boat's gelcoat."

I've rebedded 2 of ours in our 290 AJ. They were not all that hard to remove and minimal sealant was used to install them in the first place (no wonder they leaked!). Used a single edged razor blade to remove the leftover sealant before rebedding. I doubt they were put in with 5200 because removal was no big deal. I rebedded them with copious amounts of 5200. They won't be easy to take out next time (if there is a next time!)

Thanks to all for your thoughts on this subject!
With the lack of response I will conclude that there has not been allot of trouble with port lights leaking around the frame.
I will report back on the subject and let you know what seemed to work well, and not well with the removal process.

Thanks,

Jim
