boat wont stay running

Hi!, i have a 1999 searay 185 bowrider 4.3l apha gen 2. i took the distributor out to do intake manifold. wasnt sure that i marked distributor properly when i removed it, so after i reinstalled the intake manifold, i took off the port side valve cover to make sure both #1 cyl valves were not under any pressure, and timing mark was lined up, and distributor rotor was facing #1 on the distributor cap. boat starts up, but wont stay running. fuel pump sounds kinda loud but still cycles. if if rev it up it may stay running a bit, but once i let it idle down it dies and doesnt start back up easily. when i bought it i just heard it idle a bit at the previous owners house, but it did idle, so im not sure what has changed. i marked the timing mark at 10 degrees before TDC per the manual, and using a timing light it seems right there.

Carb or FI? If FI it needs to be locked into base timing mode.

hi!, its a carburetor. when i was doing the timing, i connected the purple/white wire to one of the open grounds, which i believe put it in base timing mode.

I would think a carb engine would just be a point and shoot.

Try turning the distributor a little , see if it idles.

ended up needing a new carb. runs good now.
