Boating accident on Potomac River

People just don't get it!!!!!!!! :smt013 Common sense should tell people that your speed shouldn't exceed your ability to stop within your range of sight. It seems like a lot of people leave their brains in the tow vehicles when they launch. We had a few hours of an inaugural ride on our new to us boat yesterday and were appalled by the number of brain dead people on the water. We saw everything from planing speed right up to the launch dock (which resulted in major damage but no serious injuries thank goodness) to powerful go fast boats flying under bridges with restricted vision and speed limits, at full speed.

Now this poor girl has lost her mate and is scarred for the rest of her life because someone's brain was in neutral.:smt021 Really sad.

Another dumbazz out this way bit the big one for going too fast in the dark. :smt021

New York state police say a man has died after crashing his boat on Lake George.

Troopers said Saturday that John Michaels of Bolton Landing was driving the 21-foot Steiger when it hit rocks and trees along the shoreline. The wreck happened at about 10 p.m. Friday.

Police say the 57-year-old suffered massive trauma. He was the only person on the boat.

Troopers say Michaels was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Glens Falls Post-Star reports that Michaels was an experienced boater and pilot and a respected businessman and philanthropist.

The paper says he and his brother's company built over 50 area residential communities.

He volunteered more than 100 times to fly people to distant hospitals for medical treatment and traveled to Guatemala to build schools.

Hey Wayne,

Maybe there IS more to it than common sense. This guy obviously was no dummy. Mandatory boating education may be the answer. But I don't mean the useless course the government makes us pass up here. Back when I was a teenager and was first attempting a learners' driving license our schools made us watch a movie called "Mechanized Death". It contained graphic videos of the aftermath of brutal car accidents along with coroners' reports and investigation findings. I still remember that video today, when I feel the urge to speed or take chances on the roads because I'm in a hurry. It's too bad they cancelled that program after one term because too many little boo-boo's were going home crying. Now they're getting killed and maimed in car accidents instead. Maybe that's what it will take to educate boaters too eh?

Chris, We do have a mandatory safety course for some people. :smt021

Read what is in red, Thats a big joke.

New Law Effective May 1st 2014

All individuals born on or after 5/1/96 are now required to successfully complete an approved course in boater education in order to operate a motorboat. Approved courses include those offered by NYS Parks, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or the U.S. Power Squadron. Individuals less than 10 years of age may not take this course of instruction.

Certain allowances to this law have been made for visitors to New York, persons renting a boat from a livery and persons purchasing a new boat for the first time. :wow:

So what they are saying is..

Come to NY idiot newbies you don't need to know nothing on how to operate a boat safely. :smt021

I saw that movie, one of the reasons I became a firefighter and paramedic. Good scenes in it (like last night's GoT)
