I was reading Motorboating Mag. this weekend - The new Cruisers 330 is over 16,000 lbs - wow it is similiar dimensions as my 320 and weighs more than a 340. You can't get the specs on Cruisers without signing up for a salesperson phone call. But why so heavy - Cruisers typically are not that heavy. Why are boats in general getting so heavy?

What specs are you looking for? www.searay.com has alot of the specs online.

I am referring to the new Cruisers Yachts - that was in motorboating on the cover vs. Sea Ray.

Skolbe, If your looking for the cruisers specs, I picked up their full line catalog at the boat show this year. I think it included specs. If you want it I'll give it to you, I have no need for it anymore.

I am done buying boats for quite some time. I just was surprised how heavy the boat was - the odd shaped windows must be heavy :smt043

That's funny... I was wondering about a year ago how Sea Ray was making their boats so light. For example:

My 2003 480 DB - 40,400 pounds empty
2007 52 DB - 36,700 pounds empty
2007 48 Viking - 56,450 pounds empty

Personally.... I prefer the weight when the going gets rough. But then again, that's why I bring my wife. :smt043

Gosh I hope she never finds I post on this board....

If she does, you'll never have to worry about renaming the boat to "five Suns"!

The variation in the weight of boats varies according to the construction method employed even for the same brand. My 32 foot boat weighs about 20,000 pounds and was laid up by hand. The manufacturer posted approximate weights because the same model could vary by 20% depending on equipment and how it was laid up. The same model is now vacuum formed and the variation is down to about 5%. All of the same models now have about the same amount of resin give or take 5%. The company weighs each boat when it comes off the line. Weight also varies for obvious reasons such as the thickness of hulls, amount of coring materials, type, etc. SRs should weigh about the same within a given model line because the plants are pretty automated using lots of CAD/CAM technology. Variation among the same models should be in a pretty narrow range. Variation between competing brands is based on standard equipment included and design specs. Generally speaking, heavy hulls withstand rough water better than lighter hulls of identical designs. The trade off is the higher HP required to achieve competitive speeds. Heavy hulls are also more expensive to produce which is why builders are always looking for ways to make boats lighter and more price competitive.

For what it's worth, while shopping and narrowing our choice down between a 30 Sea Ray and a 30 Cruisers, we opted for the Sea Ray, as, while it was more expensive, we felt that there was no real comparison.
The Sea Ray weighed in @ 12,500 dry, while the Cruisers weighed in @ 10,500, similarly equipped and powered.

Steve,
If you compare price per pound, I'll bet the Sea Ray was actually cheaper. :smt043
