I am purchasing a new to me 400 sedan that I hope will be here in about a week. I plan on pulling the boat probably at delivery to install a missing underwater exhaust outlet and also install the sheer bolts in both sides as it appears the remaining outlet is only secured by marine silicone. I would like to bottom paint at this time as it looks to be very thin and due for it.

Boat will be in freshwater on the Columbia river which has a strong current at Portland, Oregon. I have looked up info on the web but not really finding a go to paint. I was recommended black widow paint by a marina but wanted more opinions to finding the proper paint. Hoping that I may find a long lasting paint. Also it looks like Washington state across the river has a lot of restrictions but not sure about Oregon. I am planning to change marinas to the Washington side once they have an opening but boat would be pulled and worked on at an Oregon side marina.

I was recommended an epoxy based paint. I got it on sale at West Marine there at Hayden Island. They were quick to help and answered all my questions. Since mine is trailered, I just wanted the paint to look good as the old was thin and missing in spots. I can get the can out tomorrow and post the photo. Went on easy and was not harsh like some are.

I have read that paints high in copper have been banned and removed from the shelves. I wanted something that would go over what was there without problems. I have no clue as to what was there from the beginning on our hull.

My boat will be full time in the water and not trailered. I thought about looking at west marine but was timid about taking advice from them just because you never know if the employee is an educated mariner or just someone that needed a job when they were hiring.

I have also heard the the copper based paints were no longer legal to use in Washington but I haven’t heard about Oregon.

thank you for the reply

My biggest concern was going over, who knows what, paint. Being the third owner of the boat and having no records of past work, I wanted a cover all paint. So the epoxy based was a no brainer. It was $75 a gallon when they had their paint sale. And has very little copper in it.

TRG, I have used Multnomah Yacht Repair a few times and have been very pleased with their work. They're the ones who put Beachcomber back together after I had her trucked from Detroit. They have the equipment and knowledge to do any kind of work on your boat and do it well. Call them at 503.737.1651 and ask for Joe Ashton. Joe and his wife are the owners and both are licensed captains with unlimited ratings. I can't say enough good about them and their work.

As to your comment about WA having more strict regulations on bottom paint than OR, you are correct. WA limits the amount of copper that a bottom paint can contain. OR does not. Another good reason to have the work done in OR. Your bottom paint will be an ablative paint, meaning that over the years of use it wears off and the amount of copper in the paint is part responsible for that ablative feature.

While you're at it, ask them to check your zincs.

I have zinc inspections on the list to check. I know there are zincs on both shafts but have read shaft zinks may not be needed. I am not sure as this is my first large boat purchase. Anyone have ideas on how many zinks I need and were to locate them?

That's a question you should ask of which ever marina you have haul out your boat for the bottom paint. They will be in the best position to evaluate your zincs to see if they need to be replaced.
