Bravo III grinding when in neutral

We are in the lake and swam for a bit, started back up and backed away from the beach, when I shifted from reverse to neutral there was a terrible grinding sound. I shifted to forward and every thing was fine, shifted back into neutral and grinding sound was back. This is my first bravo 3, I have had the boat for 4 years and never heard this before?

What was it

Ignition switch stuck in the “start” position. Every time I shifted to neutral the starter tried to engage with the engine running. This ignition switch has been giving me fits, I think it is time to change it out. But man I thought our boating day was over. When I went to shut off motor I realized what the problem was.

Yea me too, we pulled the boat 4 hours to spend the weekend with my sister and BIL, it was a terrible noise, I thought well that does it, our day is ruined. Thankfully it was not serious
