Carb engine owners...how many "primer pumps" before starting?

Fuel injection takes the apprehension out of starting! Just turn the key! I didn't like the idea of complicated electricals running my simple fuel and fire powerplant but I have come around. On outboards, those bulbs must get firm and have built in valves that can wear out.

Mine, 454 BB, pump and crank then keep pumping til idle settles, BUT we figured out on here last summer, the carb plate don’t close all the way when cold, choke stove spring is weak and needs replace. On to do list this month. If I take off the flame arrest or and have some one hold the plate down it fires right up.
