Quint,
Just got back from Chicago last night. The Admiral, daughter and I spend a weekend ever year for some holiday shopping. I am a Marriott guy so I can’t tell you much about hotels other than Marriott properties. I did walk past the Elysian – nice place! Definitely out of my budget.
We drive over and park our car at Midway airport. There is a lot on 59[SUP]th[/SUP] street (Midway Park Saver) that charges $9/day with on line coupon. (We small boat guys have to save $$$). We then take the train – Orange Line – into the city. The station is right across the street from the parking lot. Depending on where you are staying, the trains usually get you pretty close to most hotels. Public transportation system is great and relatively inexpensive.
There is shopping everywhere – Michigan Ave (north of the river) and State Street (south of the river) are the hot spots. Many small stores on the side streets as well.
Great dining suggestions from others – Gino’s East for Pizza (Superior St), Gibson’s for steak (Rush Street), Carmine’s for Italian (Rush Street), Garrett’s for popcorn/carmel corn (Ontario Street) and Cheescake Factory for dessert (Michigan Ave). No wonder the clothes are tight!
Make sure you take time to see the Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari dealer on Rush Street. Nice wheels!
This year we went to Shedd Aquarium during the day and to Lincoln Park Zoo at night to see the Christmas light display. Nice change of pace from shopping.
Great city. A lot of things to do. While it is fun during this time of year, it can be cold and windy. Dress appropriately! Have fun!
