Does anyone know an approximate cost to install a Koehler or Westerbeke 5k generator in a Sea Ray 280 or 290. I’m looking for a freshwater 2000-2007 Sea Ray 280/290 but several that meet my require have no generator. I boat in southern U.S. and not having a generator is not an option. Thanks in advance. Ralph

Are you at this size for trailerability? If not, bump up to at least @ 310/320, or a little older 340. If your going to be spending enough time to need a generator, 340 is a great boat.

If you still want a 280/290. A new genny is about 12k - 15k plus install and various accessories. I’d estimate it’s at least 15k to 20k. Used genny still probably $10k installed.

A lot of the CC's have small diesel generators as options. That would be the mac daddy for any small boat.
So typically they install a small (like 5 or 10 gallon) fuel tank. The generator is typically 6 or 7 KW in size. You'll need a thru-hull sea cock and an above water exhaust. The boat's electrical will need a transfer switch and connection to the generator. Then throughout the boat CO monitors. Done.....
Probably a bit more than what @dtfeld is showing but in the end - worthy.

Citi Marine offers a Phasir generator kit to do exactly this. Includes a Racor filter and 10 gallon fuel tank with a 4.5kW diesel generator for about $9.8k. $11.5k if you want a sound shield. Uses a Kubota motor.

Probably don’t need more than that on a 28 footer.

I'd say that about covers that subject! Can't ask for more than that....
Well..

For that amount you could install an inverter and Lithium battery system sufficient to run the AC over night, maybe 2, plus about anything else you might want to run. You would have to charge with shore power. But might be an option.

$2k for a nice inverter
$6k for 800Ah of batteries
$1k for fuses wiring etc

9k all in. Silent and no CO worries either.

I was thinking the same thing. Also, Victron is making some interesting DC to DC chargers. The "house" bank could be charged from the alternator while underway. Fun to sit here and spend others peoples $$$
