Damaged running gear

Does the other shaft seem like it was properly installed by the reports or the current shop.

I agree with what other people said if that shaft was in there as tight as it supposed to be , something else would have broke The coupler, the transmission something if that prop shaft just stopped that is insane
I think you should definitely get a copy of the other inspection report I believe it's your right if this goes to court it's going to come out anyway I wish you much luck my friend

I’m having the yard pull the other shaft and inspect it. At this point I just trying to recoup something. I was hoping for a third of the repair bill which could be anywhere from 3-5k depending where the final bill lands. I really don’t think getting an attorney is in the cards because of the expense. I do have a friend/attorney who may be able to help me. We will see. I

Could the backing out of the coupling cause the scoring?

I received an email from the original repair yard, they basically ripped my surveyors report to shreds. Mind you they had one done on their own, but did not share the official findings with me other than to say that it was consistent with me striking something in the water or rope or cabling getting attached to the propeller. I provided my insurance company with the surveyors report that I paid for and they are not going to pay any portion of any claim. I’m trying to be reasonable, but I do feel the yard is somewhat responsible for this. I am hoping that they will at least meet me part of the way with the repair cost. I have disputed this with my credit card company. They don’t seem very happy about that. I guess only time will tell what’s going to happen this repair is going to be in the 10k-15k range.
Not really. The scoring in the hub appears to be part of the set screw sheared off. Really easy to sort out…..back out the set screw and compare it to a new one. My
money is that it is missing the rounded piece that goes into the shaft.

Your surveyor should have done this. This will establish that whether the set screw was set into the dimple of the shaft.

If the set screw is not damaged that would possibly support your claim that the shaft was not dimpled.

That said 5 minutes of work will prove this one way or another.

Shoot a picture of the set screw.

Unfortunately I am in NY boats in North Carolina.

Just an update. Boat should be ready this week. Credit card has returned money from repair as they investigate. Current repair yard said two bolts were hand loose on the starboard shaft coupler and two could be turned easily with a wrench. Also mentioned that shaft was not properly dimpled. I was hoping to get some pictures of this but he said it was difficult to do so. I am trying to get a statement from him as well so
I can add it to my survey that I already submitted to credit card company.

One thing I took from working on aircraft. Always witness mark bolts after tightening. Glad to hear you are getting some good news.

So we picked up the boat on the 16th from the outer banks and we are currently in Holden Beach, NC heading south. We have done around 160 miles so far so good. Final cost of the repair was roughly $12k. I am still waiting for some resolution with the credit card companies. You can follow our progress on YouTube

Hey - been watching your YouTube videos. Looks like your leaving Charleston SC today -- and by the way, Beaufort is pronounced:
"Bofirt" in NC
"Bufirt" in SC
I don't know why - it's a southern thing - heck, I grew up in the carolina's and I have relatives that live in Charleston that I can't even understand! People will be able to tell you are from NY, so you will get a pass!

Good luck with your trip/boat! Love the older SeaRays from when they were really a SeaRay! They all had the same lines wether 18ft or 50ft.

Did you make it to your destination?
We made it as far a Savannah, Ga had to head back to Long Island, NY as my daughter is having a baby in early April. We just got home yesterday.

Congratulations for the new addition. Good luck and keep us posted when you resume your trip.

I am coming to this thread very late. The only thing I did not see mentioned is that I believe these are tapered shafts. My 2000 410 had a shaft with a bad taper that took weeks to sort out. It seems to me that the shaft may not have been inserted all the way into the coupler OR there was a ridge or other imperfection on the taper that prevented full engagement. Essentially the set screw and keyway were all that were holding the shaft in. As the the brass keyway finally yielded it twisted and pushed the shaft out of the coupler. Once free water resistance took the still spinning prop into the rudder. This is consistent the surveyors findings that the set screw was tight and the tip ripped out with the shaft. If the shafts were not tapered I can still see the same result if that shaft was not fully set int othe coupler.
