Dingy depth probe location

The depth gauge only works when we go slow. It is located just below the hull on aft of the boat. Should I put it a few inches below the hull? IE deeper into the water.

Mine have always been located on the starboard transom, with the transducer below the hull bottom. But just below, not sticking way down. The top of the transducer is equal to the hull bottom...
