Encountered Aetna digital tach anomaly

Thought i would pass this on since many here have these tachs. I’ve had Aetna digital tachs for a half dozen years. Last week I encountered an issue with one of them. It was displaying an incorrect rpm. Too high. This led me to chasing a ghost regarding the synch module. But after talking with Aetna I discovered that the dip switch settings were not correct, even though the switches were in the correct position. The tach displays the switch setting immediately after displaying the 8888. Mine should be 127 or binary 1111111. The failed tach was displaying 119 or 1110111. Aetna said if I send it back they can repair this. I choose to first toggle the switches on and off several time to see if it was an internal switch contact issue. It was. It now sees 127. It took several cycles of the switches to get it to repeatedly work properly. The first time I cycled them it read 1101011. Anyway, I’ll run with it as is for a while and see how long it lasts.
 
Wow. Nice job diagnosing. This is not a surprise, I assume. Salt air corrodes everything. Why should the internal contacts and wipers of a DIP switch be immune? Nice to know that toggling of the switches to fix your problem. Thanks for sharing!
