ENGIN SYS BUS Message Anybody Know What This Means?

I have a 2004 260 DA, with low hours with what I think is an early version of Smart Craft. When cruising, the engin sometimes stalls for a split second and the smart craft message reads "Engin Sys Bus".

This happens intermittantly and only briefly, then it catches and continues to run. All gadges read normal but lose power. Once this problem starts, it does seem to repeat every few mintues until we idle or turn the engin off and restart.

I had this checked at our dealer and they could not replicate the problem or pull any error codes from the system. I think the message might mean "engin systems busy" and might have something to do with smart craft. Any body on the board encounter this or have any ideas?

I don't have the PCM555 diagnostic manual, that's the one you need to find out what that code means. However, the nature of your problem screams WIRING to this old avionics tech. You can check the cable coming off the engine (it's a big blue cable with I think a 10 pin connector) as well as the other end. If you just have a Smartcraft SC1000 tach and the system link gauges, the tach will be the other end. If you have a SC1000 speedo in additon to the SC1000 tach there will be a junction box likely behind the helm where the engine cable connects to.

Spraying some electrical contact cleaner (NOT WD40!) into the connectors once you have them off would also be a good idea.

What does the dealer suggest at this point? What have they done to eliminate any possibilities or try fixes such as what was suggested by CJ?

In a situation like this where the problem is intermittent and may not be easy to diagnose, I would think the dealer should call Mercury for some assistance in trying to identify the possible causes.

usually your smartcraft manual will have the definitions for various codes.... it seems to have changed with the more recent smartcraft versions as that error code is not defined in my manual. What Smartcraft software version do you have (displayed on start up)
