I took my 260 Sundancer out this past weekend. When I started it I noticed it had a little bit more exhaust noise than normal. It is usually a very quiet boat. When I applied power I didn't have full power above 2000 RPM's. Motor seems to be running fine from inside the engine compartment. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? The boat is a 1999 and has only 220 hrs on it.

Exhaust boot ripped, or off on one end? (although that does not explain power loss). Exhaust shutter damaged and fallen down in y-pipe? (could cause power loss if restricting exhaust). Have you pulled the hatches and took a look while engine is running?

Change in exhaust noise should always trigger a look at the raw water cooling- could be an indication of a restriction somewhere as mentioned, or possibly a clogged intake/strainer or worn impeller. That wouldn't explain loss of power, tho.

I got down in engine compartment while engine was running. Everything sounded fine in there.

Pull your dipstick and make sure you dont have water in your engine!!! It will be all bubbly and milky white. Have you ever changed the exhaust? If you are running in saltwater its way overdue! Also pull spark plugs, if you have water injestion that is only getting into the combustion chamber, your spark plug in that cyl will be clean (no carbon).

If the noise changes when you move your trim up and down and turn the wheel side to side, you probably have an issue with the U-joint in the out drive. This could have locked up your gimble bearing, giving your power loss. If it locks up completly, it will weld itself to the shaft and it will be a nightmare to get the drive off. Good Luck..

Where is the impeller located?
