OK Guys/Gals, After being gone from my boat for a very long time I am back from
visiting the old girl. Ordered bottom job, detailing, canvas, etc... Nobody can start till october but that's alright. My dripless shaft seal assembly's may need to be replaced (They are not dripless anymore). I do have the other seals on the shafts but i want NO water in my bilge. What is a fair price for total replacement at haul out and if i choose to try the spare seal's first, what would be a fair price for that? Also i wanted to tighten my rudder packing but there is very little room
for that left after i tightened them a few years ago. What would be a fair price to totally repack them? Thanks everyone for your help, JC

I'll stab $1.8K per side depending on shaft diameter, compression, log diameter etc.....

More if you want dripless rudders as well.

Hey JC,
I repacked my rudder posts myself....pretty easy. Cork screw type tool to remove the old seals. The dripless seals I have never attempted...don't you just slide the shaft out until you can get the seal off? How are your cutlass bearings?
Good Luck...

Thanks a bunch guys. ED, I will have the boat out of the water mid october (bottom job, etc...). I will surely check the cutlass bearing but my diver said there is no play and they appear to be ok.
I would not mind taking a stab at repacking the rudder gland myself. We will see. I have the extra
shaft seals and i am tempted to just change them but, but I dont want to cheap out on this. I want my dag gone bilge to be mostly dry! So thats why i am trying to get a price for swapping out the whole shaft assembly to something new that i can rely on. With a daughter in college that just got accepted in the Doctoral program EVERY, EVERY penny counts for our family. Thanks guys you all (CSR) are the BEST, JC
