Hello,

I have a 1992 290 sundancer and the wife wants to add a gas grill. What do you recommend and wher is the best place to mount it?

Welcome to the board Sparechange. Glad to have you on board.

If you will do a search you are going to find a ton of information on the board about gas grill mounting.

Welcome, I have used a Magma gasser mounted to the swim platforms of two boats. Others have installed rod holders which would work equally well. I mounted mine on the swim platform incase a flare up were to get out of hand....although it never has....I could pull a pin and turn dinner into fish food.

We use Marine Kettle 2 Gas Grill. It works great and is very simple to setup. A full day or a weekend on the water wouldn'b complete without it. A must have items, IMHO. Just be aware of the mount issue. It's not holding as well as it's meant to hold. It has to be extremelly tight not to move at all. The best thisng is to have an additional support (I use retractable aluminum post from my boat's cover. I take off the plastic end pease and adjust the higt as needed). I wouldn't leave it burning without additional support from the bottom. Picture this thing loosing a grip and have your kattle falling when it's really hot.

I mount the unit mostly at stern to the storage handle. This way I put the bottom end of my supporting post in where the towing eyeboll is. This ensures that the post is not going anywhere and it very comfortable using the swiming platform as a "cooking deck". This also works great even if the wind blows, whenever you're anchored the smoke doesn't get in anyone's face.

Alex.

Welcome Aboard  . Post some pics of your boat in the virtual marina :smt024 . I've got a magma its mounted on the back over the swim platform. Works great for us.

We have a round Magma, and use a rod-holder type mount on our 2000 290. This allows the grille to be right next to the cockpit sink.
We stowe the grille when not in use, in its bag under the cockpit seat.

where do you store the gas cannister?

What is the best place to store the gas cannister for the grill? On my last boat the canister got rusty and when I took it off the grill it kept leaking ... yikes! I see those bags that are sold for propane tank storage. Does anyone use them?

Here's what I'm doing this year - I went to Lowes and bought a section of 4" PVC waste pipe. I also bought a 4" cap, a 4" to 3" reducer, and a 3" coupler. Total cost - under $10

I cut a 16" section of pipe and glued the reducer on one end. I cut the 3" coupler in half (crosswise) and sanded down the inside of the 4" cap.

The reducer section is the "bottom", I wanted that open to be able to vent propane if a tank leaked. A 1lb tank fits perfectly inside the pipe, then the section of 3" coupler goes in, then a second tank. The cap is snug but removable. The reason for the coupler is to prevent the bottom of the top tank from damaging the top/threads of the bottom tank.

I'm still in final assembly - later tonight I am going to add a rope between the cap and the reducer. My plan is to hang this contraption inside my transom locker, which is also vented to the outside. I hope to have the whole thing mounted this weekend.

Once I "giterdone" I'll try to remember to take some pictures and post them.

tank storage

Thanks CJ,

I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. I'm not sure about confining the gas in a pipe like that ... seems like it could be dangerous. It sounded like you had a vent designed for the bottom though.

Dom - pretty much that's it. The bottom is a bit different with the 4" to 3" reducer (the 3" end is at the bottom).

I added the rope which right now is a bit long - I'm not exactly sure where I will hang it in the transom locker, and I figured a little long was better than a little short.

A big hole - 3" to be exact. Also since the transom locker is vented, confining the gas won't be a problem.

CJ-

Good one. Next time I'm in storgare I'll look to see what we can all store in that locker. Right now we have the Newport gas grill, bumpers and power line. I'll bet we have room for it too.

Thanks for the tip.

Mike

Our dealer installed rod holders, angled slightly away from the boat. Works great, particularly if you plan to grill while standing on a dock. The mount is sold by Magma and the grill is the small kettle.

I have the same boat. How long have you had it? I was thinking of doing the same thing with a grill as you.
