Hi, everyone! I just bought my 240 the other week and have had this question on my mind since day 1. How in the world am I going to retrofit a gas generator in this this boat? I've tried searching the thread, but can't find anything yet. I'm guessing I'm not the first person with this question... Any success stories?

That looks a lot like a 240DA I saw for sale on e-bay a while back. Nice.
Search the 240DA thread, one of the guys had a dealer installed 3kw Westerbeke low CO unit installed recently.

That would be me.

This option ran me 9k. Im sure you can get it cheaper without going through a dealer.

Based on my research, it can be done for about 3-5K. So far I couldn't justify the expense.

Alex.

Where are you finding that it can be done for that. I've been having different shops price it out for me and it seems to come in around the 6to 7k mark.

I'm not sure if I have the shop name. I'll try to review my documents later. The information I got from the last fall's boat show in Atlantic City, NJ. I was inquiring about installing A/c-heat and genset. The response was about $3-$3.5K for each application. I didn't think a/c was worth it and got carry-on. I also don't think I'll get the genny since we're hopping to upgrade eventually. I also havea vacuflash and not sure there's enough room for a genny. But, I would really want it I could move the water heater to the same side where the holding tank is and I guess out the genny on the starboard side.

As for the difference in the estimates, I'm pretty sure that some applications will have different prices when comparing different regions.

3-5K for a Westerbeke 3.0 installed is not possible. The unit alone is 5K. 6-7K turn key is about right depending on the boat and what ever else needs to be relocated to accommodate the gen.

I just looked through my papers and found proposal for Kohler Models 5E and 4EF. The quote is $4830 or $5347 with soundsheeld. The distributor I got the quotes from is
winter Yacht Basin from Mantoloking, NJ 732-477-6700.

This was just one of the findings I recall.

That's probably just the genset and soundshield. The soundshield alone runs about $500. Then you'll need another $800-1000 for misc parts - water muffler, thru-hulls, seacock, strainer, hoses, fuel line and fittings, wiring and switches. Then add the ~20 hours labor to put all this stuff in and make it work. Plus, as never monday says, there's usually something in the way that has to relocated.

There's just no way that those can be turnkey prices. :smt009

Here's another note I found:

http://www.metstrade.com
3.0 BPMG - smallest marine gasoline generator
dementions: 24 1/2w, 13.6D, 14 1/2H
price installed: $4,700+$1,500
output amp/volts: 120v, 25amp 3kw, 0.4 gal pr/hr
781-631-3282

So far, this one and previouse posting I thought were very usual price range. But, I met a guy from a mobile service who gave me the best quote. If I'll find the number I'll post it.

I read this as you found a place that would include the cost of the generator and instillation for a grand total of between $3,000 and $3,500. The price sounded too good to be true.

But then....

OK, so $4,700 plus $1,500 = $6,200 for a basic installed marine generator. This is about right.

We're in the process of having A/C installed on our 250. Price was just short of $2300 for 9000BTU unit and installation.

I'd say keep looking. A while back I was considering the 3.0 Westerbeke for my boat. I found a few dealers willing to sell the entire kit for 3800. This included the muffler, wiring, hoses, strainer, water pump, switches and all fittings. I would have installed myself.

Also, last summer I helped a very inexperienced friend install a 20,000btu AC/reverse cycle heat in his Cruisers. Got entire kit for just under 2K.

I had a 3000 watt continuous 9000 watt peak inverter/charger with 4 dedicated golf cart batteries on my 260. It worked great for overnight or for anchoring for the day. Mine was dedicated for the A/C. It's an alternative and worked well for us for 4-1/2 years.
