Hardin stainless Raw water pump reviews ?

I wanted to comment on this post and provide an update on Hardin pumps. I had a Mercruiser pump fail (10 years old) and decided to go with a Hardin Pump in 2015. When I saw this post in July I went to my boat and inspected my pump to make sure there were no issues. The pump looked perfect and I thought that the bearing failures noted were either caused by how the pulley was installed or maybe a small percentage of bearing failures.

My Hardin pump just failed on me (leaking at the bearings). I had purchased the pump with their pulley so it's not how the pulley was put on but a premature failure with the bearings/seal. The boat has approximately 60 hours since the pump replacement. I did contact Hardin and they are going to warranty the pump but I have to return it to them for inspection and rebuild. Needless to say I'm not going to install it back in the boat and for those of you who have these pumps, I would keep a close eye on them.

I'll keep an eye on them. Where did you see them leaking? Behind the pulley?

About 100 hours on one pump and around 60 on the other. No issues.

The newer mercruiser water pumps have replaceable wear plates. Went with the mercruiser pump since they now have replaceable wear plates. My dealer encouraged me to go this route. Time will tell.

Yes. Behind the pulley. If I used an inspection mirror, I would have seen signs of rust behind the pulley. Lesson learned for next time.

Do you have the 8.1 motor? That's cool if so. I'm surprised they did that. They wouldn't make the money on new pumps anymore..

Or will they make more? From what little I know, it's the back(?) housing that wears and its a separate part from the actual pumping mechanism -- I needed one replaced this spring. If they have a new pump that accommodates wear plates, maybe they'll start selling a bunch of new complete pump assemblies rather than just housings as people with worn housings realize they can now step up to a new pump less expensive to maintain long term.

I say kudos to Mercury for doing this. The old design is kind of dumb and results in expensive part failure that really isn't necessary. Now all they need to do is design a pump with easier impeller access. I won't hold my breath, though, they have a captive market within Brunswick, and thus little motivation for change.

I replaced both engines with these pumps with pulleys installed (gen 7). Its been roughly 50 hours and 1 is leaking out of weep hole. Does anyone know why this happens? Also if it comes with pulley installed you need a smaller serpentine belt as the pulley is smaller. I have noticed that there is belt dust now on both engines.

Give the company a call. I've had mine for 4 years (60 or so hours a year) and replaced the impeller at the start of last season with no problems so far. No dust here. Could it be the type of belt you installed or out of alignment?

Ditto - have had mine for about 4 seasons and works like a charm.

3 seasons and 100 hrs on mine with no issues as well. My local parts supplier just recently offered to take them back and pro-rate me a set on the new gen 7 plus with the double seal and larger bearings.

I called Hardin Marine and they want me to send pump back for them to install a new seal. Apparently when it leaks out of weep hole the seal has failed.
Alignment for pump looks good, I did also install new alternator about the same time and both look like they might be ever so slighty closer to engine. I'll see if I can space them out a hair.
For the ones that got pump with pulley installed what size belt did you get? I measured and came up with 112.5" (belt# 4061125) its been working good but maybe slightly loose. possibly 112" would be better.

Well spring is upon us and its time for impellers. Pulled my hardin ss pumps apart and the inner seals have failed. Bearing cavities are full of water and bearings are grumbling. Ordered the deluxe rebuild kits and am currently pressing in new bearings and seals. I feel these should last longer than a hundred or so hours. They recognize there is a problem since they redesigned their pumps.

Oh no. I just ordered their standard kit and not the deluxe. I wonder if I should ask them to send me a set of bearings?

20 dollar difference between the kits, i would. Cheap insurance and only adds about 30 minutes to the job with a good shop press. I had no idea I had a problem until I took the impellers out

I don't have a shop press tho? I'm watching the video now. What a PIA.

I have around 200 or so hours without a problem ( knock on wood ) replace the impeller last season. I don't see any leaks or bearing failure.

Mine werent leaking past the outside dust seal just felt a little “grumbly” when I spun the shafts by hand. Didnt see the water until i popped the dust seal out. Nbd, can make it a brand new pump again in about two-three beers time. My boat floats tuesday so id rather find this stuff now than in July

Its been almost 2 years since they replaced the seals and roughly 100 hrs and they working great and no belt dust anymore.
