WP_20130701_002.jpgWP_20130701_003.jpgHas anyone else had this happen? This is the port storage in the cockpit of a 420 Sundancer. The only thing we keep on that shelf are cans of sunscreen. There was even a plastic bottle of sunscreen that melted as well. I saw no signs of heat or fire, and I don't think its been that hot here in Tampa.

Many sunscreens have petrochemicals, which can react with some plastics (petrochemicals). I'm betting that's what happened to you.

Yikes, thanks guys! It was mostly the aerosol type sunscreens. No cans were leaking, but i guess there was enough residue on the cans to cause a reaction. Very interesting.

I agree with the sunscreen possibilty
I also know the little rubber door stoppers/bump pads don't like fresh teak oil.

Yikes.... If sunscreen has that kind of reaction with petroleum based products then I can only imagine that's it completely healthy and safe to spread across your body.

I have sunscreen eat through 3 or 4 pair of sunglasses a year. Sunscreen can be harmful compared to the benefit if you don't get enough sun exposure to justify application. Not all sunscreens are the same either. The aerosol types you mentioned are the most corrosive and toxic from my experience. I got very sick after using a particular generic drugstore brand. It took a while to link the nausea and headache to it but something about it makes me feel like crap every time I apply it. Aerosol sunscreen is so convenient and it has its place maybe for re aapplication but I always start with lotion and only use lotion on my face. The safest sunscreen for children is zinc oxide based. People don't care for it due to the clumping and pasty residue but the new nano zinc sunscreens are much improved. The chemicals in sunscreen especially the aerosols are known endocrine disruptors. Use them sparingly on your children.
