Ignition Circuit "POP"

Seen a few blow up from the cells being nearly dry. Charger probably boiled off the water over time and was never checked / refilled.

Batteries are 4 years old so, about due for replacement anyway.

Gotta check the battery water on regular occasions
Yeah. They where supposed to have been replaced in 2020 when the previous owner bot the boat. Starting fresh with all new over the winter.

Lesson learned that if the battery is dead after sitting on the charger for a week+ there is something wrong. Don’t push the button.

Tired battery plates get scaled up boils electrolyte out of the battery charger keep sending a charge plates get hot because plates are now dry acid makes Hydrogen the pop goes the weasel. Check the rest of the batteries liquid levels if the are all low from gassing and over charging I would consider replacing charger as well. Remember a charger only charges because the battery is low on charge which causes resistance. That resistance when the charger applies voltage to maintain that voltage which causes a raise in current . Remember the charger does not cause the amps the battery does a full charged battery doesn't have any resistance there for it doesn't draw any amps. You can see where it's hard to determine what's at fault the battery or the charger at this point. To add to the mix poor connections in the circuit can also cause resistance which will cause this problem also.

I have never had that happen, except in a truck once, it was scary. But not on a boat, wow.

I am pretty religious about checking/maintaining levels as I use SLA batts.

Sure, but I’ll guarantee you that the Walmart manufacturing specs are less robust than the other brands. Those batteries sell for less than $100 when every other similar battery is $150 or more. Got to get the savings from somewhere.
Maybe volume? No idea without comparative data to analyze. You're likely correct but the "costs more so it must be better" plan isn't always a good path to take.

Getting rid of them. Not putting Walmart POS batteries in a boat.
I learned my lesson on this going through Sam's batteries every year. I now only buy Interstate (which is convenient because my marina is a dealer) or Duralast. I prefer Interstate, but I needed a cranking battery this summer and the marina couldn't get any due to "supply chain issues".
