Inflatible Dinghy, Torqeedo Motor, & Registration

It's not that high pitched in person. Certainly not enough to be a threat to hearing. did you miss where I said you can have normal conversations while underway? Try that with a gas powered motor.

No I didn't miss that, what you are missing is if the video is correct, which I think you said you did not see, it demonstraed a constant high pitch whine which, in my opinion is annoying, and the high pitches can affect your inner cochlear hair cells if listened to over longish periods. How do I know that, we have two Audiology clinics and see it all the time. A gas motor is loud too but does not have a high pitch whine, it's lower in tone and will also affect your hearing if also listened to over longish periods. It's just that I would find the high pitch whine annoying just like others here said too.

Thanks All. I did end up buying the 1003 and INITIALLY used it with the Sea Eagle SE-9. It worked fine, but was tired of putting together the SE-9. I subsequently bought the Mercury Air Deck 270, which works MUCH better. I'd also agree that the sound it not near as loud as a gas outboard engine and really doesn't have that high pitched sound. One problem I have is when motor gets tangled in hydrilla as it doesn't have sufficient HP to power its way though/out. But then again, neither does a gas 5HP engine--needed a 15-20 HP engine to make it through.

In the end, I like the Torqueedo 1003 due to all the attributes previously mentioned (e.g., not storing gas, low weight when compared to gas, fact you can submerge engine and still use it, etc)

Having watched the video in question, I have to say our 1003 does not have that same high pitched whine - not sure if that sound is due to the recording equipment or there is something wrong with the motor. There is a lower pitch "whirling" sound in the video - that is all we hear. It is not loud at all. In fact, we sneak up on ducks and other waterfowl all the time.

Al,
I have an inflatable with a Torqeeto 401. I boat in Md and never registered. Never had any problems with the DNR. The convenience is great if you have limited storage. The torqeeto is very reliable but does take some time to charge up. It is slow but beats rowing and you never have to worry about carrying gas on board. When we moved up in size and had a swim platform large enough, we bought a hard bottom with a 6hp outboard. I wouldn't recommend it if you spend more than an hour or so running around in the dinghy, but if you are just running to shore a few times, it is a great alternative.
