This^^^Mine “loses” the bottom occasionally, or gives an errant reading and occasionally doesn’t read correct in my slip…not sure why that is, works one I leave the slip.
They can be a little flaky, but about the only thing you can do is make sure the face of the transducer is clean, and the wires are tight on the back. There are 3 spade connectors on the back…make sure they are tight and clean.
If the transducer is a P79 adjustable angle that looks like this, it sits in a well that is glued to the hull and filled with fluid (can be water, antifreeze, mineral oil). It it leaks out or gets low, then you will get no signal or intermittent signal.

Absolutely it would. Nothing should cover the face of the transducer.Question - would bottom paint on the transducer affect it?
