Hi,

We normally boat in the Upper Potomac and have found quite a variance in gas prices.

This weekend, we may make our first trip below the 301 bridge and I'm wondering if any marinas are known for having lower prices than others.

I'd appreciate any help.

Mike

Mike,
I have purchased diesel at Colonial Beach, Coles Point, Port Kinsale, Spring Cove Marina Solomons Island, and the Bay Bridge Marina. I know you are not looking for diesel, but the variance in cost between marinas is pretty close, gas or diesel. I have found Coles Point to be fairly reasonable priced. Bay Bridge was the most expensive.
Colonical beach fuel docks can be really tough to enter/exit depending on what the tide is doing. We ahd a transient berth last fall by the fuel docks and it was tragically comic watching guys bang off pilings trying to get into the fuel dock. Approaching against the tide is essential to maintaining control.

Skip,

Thanks for the great info. I'll be sure to be careful if we head into Colonial Beach.

Have you heard anything about Point Lookout? That might be where we end up spending the night.

Mike

We have not stayed at point lookout, but I know Prince WIlliam Marine hosts cruises there.

Skip,

Thanks again. We knew about the Prince William Marina trips, and as a matter of fact they have a trip the weekend of 18 August. Unfortunately, we're unable to make that trip, but thought we might check out Point Lookout on our own.

Just got some petrol from Coles Plantation (pt). $3.05/gal + .17 rebate :smt038 Cheapest fill up to date! Restaurant having its share of cooks...even the menu says it can take a while :smt017 but the oyster po boy and overlooking the small dock area make it a worthy stop.

A few weeks prior, Tall Timbers marina was 3.58/gal... :smt009
Since I live around the corner, thought I'd give Rick some business but the fuel dock is ratty and don't cut the corner on the red channel marker at med/low tide or else you'll be looking for a lift (so I'm told).

Have fun down here-

John

Wow, $3.05 is a great price. I probably should have headed up to Coles Point.

We ended up spending the night at Port Kinsale on Saturday and had a great time. What a great group of people working there! The transient dock only had one other boat on it, so it was essentially as if we were all alone. The Sunday brunch was incredible and I highly recommend it.

The gas at port Kinsale was $3.19. That was on the low end of the range in the Occoquan area, so I just went ahead and filled up rather than shopping around.

You can scratch Point Lookout Marina from the fuel roster...cruised by today and there's a line of Police Tape around the fuel dock. Don't know if that mean some of the boys working in Waste Management from New York came down for 'some business' or their pumps are T.U.

Hailed them on 16 and they said they don't know when their pumps will be back in business. Great anchorage tho as it is well protected. Dropped the hook in a small cove just past the marina this am to get out of the wind.

Gomez,

First of all I'm extremely jealous that you got out on a Tuesday to anchor. I'm stuck in the office all week.

I wonder what the police tape was all about at Point Lookout. I'm glad we made the choice to go to Port Kinsale instead.

Mike

   on Port Kinsale/the Moorings!

Went over to Coles Pt for dinner and pulled in to a dark cove...looks like they're closed on tuesdays...got them on 16 and they were kind enuf to recommend the Moorings. Thought about the dark RTB and decided to make a trek.

Met Charlie who happened to be manning the kitchen last night. Btwn him and his sister, looks like they've got a great deal going. He gives the cooks tuesdays off and takes care of the kitchen work. Wife and I had a philly cheese and the Cuban sammy...the Cuban ROCKS! Anchor lite decided to die on the way home, but the 25 min trek (chasing back my track file line on the GPS) kept me clear of the unlit Panther Uboat bouy.

Getting thru crab pot haven outside my marina at night in choppy water is a PITA, but beats a week in the office! Got a week out of there to enjoy the boat...going to outer banks tomorrow for the remainder. :smt038

Tape was because of a fire on the fuel dock. That place is really run down. The docks are hurting, the restaurant didn't even open this season, now no gas.

Kinsale has a great Sunday brunch and they do make a mean Cuban Sandwich.

Wow, now I'm really glad we went to Port Kinsale instead of Point Lookout.

Prince William Marina had their annual trip down the weekend of 18 August for the Jazz Festival. I wonder if it was a total bust.

Mike, I was on that trip. That's where we found out about the fire and NO FUEL! Prince William Marina put us all on a school bus and took us into Solomon's for the day. The concert was a lot of fun, too. We had a great time, it's just a shame the way that marina has deteriorated.
