Man are boat prices going up

Saw this on Facebook this morning. In 2005 we bought new same boat motor combo and a trailer for $37k... interesting last 15 years in the boating industry... now compare 15yr ago pricing to similar boat today...crazy

You paid $37k for a boat and trailer with something like a $75k MSRP for the boat alone?

I paid $5500 for boat and trailer in October 2019. NADA value now is $7815. I'm pretty sure I could get $8000 for it (but I'm not selling :p).

That boat wasn't a 75k boat back in '05 when it was new. I saw what the original owner of my previous '08 24' bowrider paid...it was just under 40k....

in 2005... ask Dennis I bought it from his dealership... I think I bought three of them new from them....

I have another story to add regarding the market... My good friend just bought a sight unseen pocket cruiser from 1100 miles away. He hired a surveyor and split the cost with the seller. He received the report this morning and then wired the money to the seller. A Uship driver showed up and is now enroute with the boat in tow. This literally all occurred in under 2 days from the time he found the ad online. Mind blown!

40k pocket cruiser. 2006? 25'? Something along those lines. 1 owner. No bottom paint. Outdrive looks new still. Surveyor found a couple of spider cracks in the gel coat and the fuel inlet hose needs replacement (cracking).

Your friend is nuts. :)

My friend's boat was delivered an hour earlier than expected yesterday. 3PM the driver showed up vs 4PM quoted. I went over last night and was honestly blown away. The outdrive still has the original Merc gloss on it. The hull shines like new. The carpet in the cockpit doesn't even look like it's been walked on. The cockpit seating looks new. The canvas even looks brand new. I checked the hour meter and it's at about 330 hrs, so it's definitely been used a hair under 30 hrs per year which is about average for a day boater. We splashed it right away and went out for the balance of the evening. Stopped for dinner on the water and returned to the dock last night. A few things I found that need addressing, but overall a SOLID buy. The seller told my friend that 15 people had called on the boat since listing it two days ago. In 2 days it was surveyed, price negotiated and money wired, quote received for shipping/locked in/paid for, 1100 miles shipped, then splashed and tested. I have never seen a boat deal go down so fast in my life.

Yeah, in this day and age you would think surveyors are overbooked and we can't get truck drivers to show up, sometimes for days.

Well, my BIL wants to join the ranks of new boat buyers that shouldn’t do it. So he asked me for some thoughts and help. I told him it was not a good time to buy, and its really not. I swear that if I had no moral compass, I could make a decent amount of money in a side-hustle throwing boats from salvage yards on trailers and selling them as “just needs a tune up and cleaning”. Because that is what a lot of the boats on the market look like.

What are you talking about? That’s “turn key” condition. :)

I think that's already happened in my area. There are several storage lots that were full of old boats and the boats are gone, seriously probably hundreds gone!!

During a recent day out, saw a dozen or so 70's - 80's boats in the 18-25 ft range cruising, they were fixed up, freshly polished / painted, with the convertible style tops, looked great, like reading those old brochures, nice to see them!

Boat listed on Facebook for sale. Someone sent me a message saying they were in the area where the boat was could they go see it. I informed them no I did not want anyone on the boat unless I was there. It looks as though "no" does not mean "no". When I arrived at the boat still on dry land, to finish up some of the projects and cleaning. The back canvas was only snapped with one snap, the sliding door leading into the salon was wide open, and someone had taken a leak in the head. The head was no turned on so the urine was still in the bowel when I got there. if this person would get ahold of me with a offer no way would I sell him the boat.

Not just boats, but watercraft prices are ridiculous....here is an ad for a pair of Seadoos...brand new (if you could find one) they are around $18k Canadian....

I guess you can ask what you want....these have been for sale for about 3 weeks now, so maybe I’m not the only one that thinks it’s crazy.

I bought a 1991 Bluewater 18' bowrider eight years ago. It had a blown head gasket, and a tuliped valve.
The upholstery was in poor shape, I got it for $800. I fixed the engine problems, added a few things like an electric trolling motor, a nice Garmin, & extra batteries. I bet with the purchase price I didn't have $2000.00 into it.
I sold it yesterday for $7000.00, with the poor upholstery.
It had the 4.3, extremely good running and reliable boat, but there's no way in normal market I could have got that much for it. I sold it to a brand new to boating family.
