Long poat warning, and a bit of a rant. We are in our second year at a new marina this year. Have the same slip we had last year, and we are the oddballs on the dock for sure. Smallest boat by far, the only ones who fish, and younger than most on the dock. That said, we get along with everyone around us. Plenty of friendly chat, we help anyone who may need it, and no issues when we are hauling a cooler of fish down the dock and they are socializing. They usually want to see what we hauled in. Being fisherman, we are usually in a month earlier than the rest of the dock, and a solid month after most everyone else.

We have a brand new neighbor this year, who have both slips to the north of me. We share the pier between my boat and his big boat. He seems new to boating, and bought two boats that both needed a lot of work. That's fine, we all work on our boats when needed, but one doesn't run, and the other (an 80's 34' sundancer) had no interior at all until this past week. Well, for the last 4 weeks now, every trip down to my boat results in me having to clear his crap out of the way so I can even get down our shared pier. Thats if he's there or not. Deflated dingy draped over my dock box and blocking the pier, pressure washer, leaky old outboard on a stand, and the icing on the cake is that he's had at least one, sometimes two dock carts left on the pier loaded with his stuff, one has been there filled with tools and supplies for two+ weeks, he's using it as a workbench now. His family has been down a couple times, and they are fully content sprawling out on the main dock where the fingers meet, and making everyone else tiptoe around them with no regard for them.

Two weeks ago I tried to make a couple friendly comments to him, trying to be nice, but obviously it isn't getting through. I almost feel like that's why it was the worst it's been when I got there Friday night. I mentioned it to the harbormaster this past Saturday as he asked why I was dropping my cooler off instead of wheeling it up like he's used to seeing, told him I can't get down my pier. Apparently there have already been several complaints made by people who aren't me. What had me concerned is that he made the comment that he would say something on my behalf, but the damn harbormaster is concerned about retaliation. I said you can see his mess almost from the office, shouldn't be that hard to just walk down when he's working on the boat driving the rest of the dock away. Talking with the neighbors, others have made comments as well, more direct than i have, and get the same blank stare I received with no change.

Harbormaster gave me the option to move slips, but we like our slip and rest of our dock, plus if I leave that doesn't address the actual problem. We have a 27' boat in a 45' slip, the space ia awesome. What would CSR do? Give a chance to have it addressed and try to be neighborly with the new family, or take the harbormaster up on his offer to move and get to another slip?

WOW! Around here, his stuff would end up in a homeless camp. Nothing sits out, for long. That or the stuff left out would end up on the bottom. Id file a formal complaint and ask for them to be moved or take my pick of new slips.

That is why we loved being full time RV'rs. If we didn't like a neighbor, we moved.

When you signed a mooring agreement, was there anything in the contract that explicitly prohibits any of your neighbours activities or behaviour? ie leaving crap all over the dock, a boat must be able to maneuver on its own. Etc.
I would think that most marinas would be very proactive wrt to this type of owner, if only for the sake of the other boaters and the appearance of their business.

Everything except working on your boat is in the handbook as not allowed.

Sounds like your in a town dock, because you reference the Harbor Master as being the dock master for your marina?
Also sounds like you confronted the other guy?

Either way I would go to the person in charge and insist he up hold the rules. And if he won't, then go to the town directly and get the HM to enforce the rules.

If all else fails, new slip...

I will say this, any marina I have ever been with would not tolerate that for more then a day.

So I see you're in Northern IL, on the rivers? May I ask the marina in question?

It's the marina's duty to "police" the situation and not allow boaters to leave their crap everywhere. Most places are pretty good about it -- allow just enough leniency to do what you need to do, but not letting it get out of hand. As he is bothering more dock mates than you, what are the chances that the dockmaster can move the offending vessel to the "work dock" while he completes his projects -- somewhere out of the way of everyone.

If that fails, start selling is chit on ebay. I do need a dingy and outboard. :) Or it would be so sad if something was accidentally dropped in the river.

Do not confront your neighbor…..ever…. Demand the Harbormaster do something, if no success go over his head.
Once on a dock years ago when we had one god damn wagon to take stuff up the dock to your boat there was only one guy that would hog it….. I would take the stuff out and put it on the dock and take the cart

Private marina on Lake Michigan, again the guy is new so I'm trying to be patient, but it's getting old after only a few weeks.

A part of me thought I was being a little harsh, guess not.

Private marina with the Harbor Master running the dock? When you say Harbor Master does that mean the real Harbor Master is also your Dock Master? Confused.

Anyway I would call the owner and/or force the marina's dock master to correct the issue. And I wouldn't worry about offending someone that isn't worried about offending you.

My dock neighbor where I am now his fresh water tap broke…. Long story….. his boat wash company hooked up to my fresh water filter and proceeded to wash my neighbors boat. I went up to management and said wtf you knew it was broke now Tim’s cleaning guy is using my filtered water to wash his boat. They were right on it.
Tim comes up later that night and says wow….. first time my boat looks great….. I said ya you phuckr it’s my filtered water….. your damn cleaning company hooked up to my filter system……. We laughed and it was a joke all weekend….. but I tell you his boat looked good

Basically he’s talking about the dude who manages the marina. Not sure which marina he is at, but most in our area are municipal owned but privately managed. Some remain city managed. And most keep a pretty tidy place, save for a few on the rivers.

Not harsh at all. We need to share the space and be respectful. I just met my new dock neighbor a few weeks ago and the first thing I asked him was whether my kyack was in the way. Everything flows from there. At my last dock, we could basically share some items (hoses, dog gates, etc.) as we all got along reasonably well and respected each others stuff.

Which is normal….respect your neighbor it isn’t hard…… my neighbor Tim asked me the other day after being beside him for a year….he says this year if I am too loud or too rowdy…please say something….. I said phuckr….why do you think I leave every weekend….. we are good friends now….. last weekend I was alone on the boat……doing maintenance…..2:00 he yells down I’m in the bilge he says get out of there we are taking the little boat to the island…. I said no …..then said to myself screw it

It was a riot…met so many new people…the way boating used to be

on our docks it is understood that u must maintain a clear pathway as this could be a potential fire hazard if people are unable to safely move off the dock in an emergency. thats how i would address it with the dockmaster.

Unfortunately, it's a lost art. We have a new dock neighbor one well away. They were out on Sat. Very loud and obnoxious with several F bombs flung around. First time I met them, so giving them the benefit of the doubt as Sat was the first truly nice, warm day we have had. Poor guy left the slip and returned 15 min later down an engine. So I help get them back into their slip. Hopefully, it works out for him.
