Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Has anyone been able to convert the mechanical 3126 to electronic gauges? I was considering having the data displayed on the Garmin or Maretron just not sure what's involved.

Thanks

hulltruth and SBmar have a few threads on it. SBMar actually makes a whole kit to do it, but it's not cheap.

I simply upgraded all the factory gauges to VERATRON and added gauges for trans temp and generator oil pressure & temp.

At the same time I changed out the defunct systems monitor to old fashioned (like me) alarm buzzers and lights.

Also added a BOREL alarm to operate independently for both engines & genny and an independent bilge alarm.

My system is not anywhere near as nice as the MARETRON, but I can understand it, set it up and troubleshoot is needed.

Not necessarily the best way, or the right way, but it's MY WAY !

Nice. Am interested to see your lights and buzzers setup. Did you make your own panel or something ?

Yes.

Initially I was going to buy one on line, and was really torn between Flounder Pounder and New Wire Marine, and I really liked the idea of the silver/pewter panels with the black gauges.

The problem was my needs for the additional gauges (2 transmissions, generator oil pressure and generator water temp) put me into the "custom" category, requiring me to make a template.

Electronics aside, there are 3 panels on the 1995-1999 450DA.

At the time of purchase, my center panel was an unholy mess, so I made what I thought would be a temporary panel out of the 1/4" acrylic purchased on Amazon.

Once I did that and learned, the main instrument panel was not too difficult, and I built it just to see if I could get it good enough for a permanent replacement.

The switch panel is same as factory, built by Flounder Pounder, with a couple of additional spots for more rockers.

The switches themselves came from New Wire Marine and are backlit (red) and they can custom label as necessary.

I think there may be some pix on the 450DA thread, but will post some photos here as well.

Wow, it looks really neat. I bet you have a helm cover for it , the old stuff looked a bit sunburnt .

Thanks for digging up the photos. My original systems monitor is temperamental hence the interest. Seems there are nice and simple little red led options out there , as opposed to breaking the bank to go more digital.

Digital is likely a better choice with the Maretron.

It's just a little bit above my Fred Flintstone tech level...
