Decided to remove my heat exchanger on the genset this past weekend and do a clean-out. Was actually pretty clean (tubes) but did have a chunk of an anode in there as well as some pieces of the impeller (hopefully from a prior failure!).

I use the same very simple set-up for boiling the engine heat exchanger. Use a mild solution of barnacle buster (6:1). I'll now clean the exterior and repaint before reinstalling. Will also use new SS clamps on all connections. They sell the gaskets but I'll likely make my own from some neoprene gasket sheets I have.

I have a regulator for the pump but don't have it installed in this case; the pump is too powerful running at a full 13v (4.5 amps) so I like to kick it down a bit using an adjustable regulator. It's a plain' harbor freight marine-grade 12v water pump with 3/4" hose and fittings.

Also, I recommend that you check your heat exchanger's anode when changing them out. If it doesn't come out in one solid chunk or seems like it's all gummedup in the exchanger, it probably is filling up a good number of the tubes and those tubes are doing NADA to cool the engine.
