My alt was seized up a few times this year, had to break it free and it worked fine, but im being proactive and replacing it.
I pulled it out and taped over wires separately, I thought if the ignition breakers and keys were off there was no power to engines, I was wrong. Had an arc in engine room with the hot wire thats why i taped over. A little shocking to me.;). Do you know if battery switches are off, engines are dead?
Anyway, I have my kid staying on the boat this week for a bit and my question is it ok to turn on battery switches with the leads taped over. Im just being paranoid?

I believe the alternator lead will be hot even with the battery switch in the off position. If you did an adequate job using the tape you should be fine staying on the boat.

With the battery switch off, nothing should be hot except the bilge pump

Hmm mixed messaging.

Oh, I forgot to mention when pulling the alt, the lower support bracket was completely cracked and not supporting anything. Do any of you know if you have to remove the water distribution bracket to re install the alt support bracket? At first glance it looked that way, but I was just happy to get out of the eng room.

Post #3 is correct. Only you can tell what needs to be removed. Should be simple enough.
