So I took my boat out of the marina and they kept the drain plug. I'm launching it tomorrow and I'm wondering what at Home Depot would suffice for a drain plug - some brass threaded object. I'll buy a few of them. 2003 Sea Ray 220. Thanks.

Any marine stores around you?

I don't think so. Are Garboard plugs brass or bronze? I know they are tapered. In a pinch? Maybe. Permanent? Absolutely not.

It's a garboard drain, I've seen them at Walmart and of course any marine place.

Be careful, PIA to replace if it gets screwed up.

Get the proper plug. Or at least one with the correct thread.
We have a 21 foot jet boat and I took the plug out to trailer it to Mexico. Plug was out so the melted snow would drain out. I forgot to put it in when I launched. I drove it a few miles before I realized I was taking on water. Kept the speed up and beached it. I had about a foot of water in it before I figured I had a problem.
Scary.

I'm almost certain I have seen brass drain plugs in the boat section at Walmart. You have a Walmart near you?

WEST MARINE Garboard Drain Plug

Allows quick drainage of boat when hauled out. 1/2" NPT tapered pipe threads ensure a watertight fit. •Cast brass construction
The Brass plug from HD will be just fine NPT stands for 'national pipe thread'. A couple sounds like a good idea, I think I will get an extra myself.

NPT is tapered. That's what holds it in place. Is the HD plug NPT? Looking at the pix, it does not appear so to me. It appears to be a straight thread. I would be concerned about the lack of friction allowing the plug to back out due to vibration.

Durable, lead-free brass is an excellent choice, with all tapered pipe threads manufactured to highest quality standards and tolerances.

It will work fine in a pinch. Hell, those plugs are all I ever used on my last Sea Ray, and we used to take it out cruising the intercostal all the time.

If you're really concerned then put a thick layer of teflon tape on it to help prevent it from backing out.

You'll be fine. Have fun.
