Replace fridge with Icemaker?

I have two fridges on my 340: one in the cabin and one in the cockpit...which seems like a waste to me...I really only need one.
I'd love to have an icemaker in place of the cockpit fridge....anyone ever swap one out?
If so, what brand and are you glad you did?
 
I have the cockpit icemaker in my 330 and was thinking another fridge would be more useful. Thats because I normally drink bottled water, beer or red wine and none of those use ice.

I've been planning to do the same thing. I'd rather have a fridge in the cockpit than the icemaker that came with my 330.
 
I also mostly use bottled water so ice maker would not be used. However, i also have the cockpit fridge but use it very seldom.
 
I never use my icemaker....What I will do is take beers out of the fridge in the galley and put in the icemaker which in essence is a freezer......With the door opening so often, beers wont freeze, just get really, really cold
 
I have the 2 fridge set-up same as the OP. I love it!! Galley fridge is mostly food stuff and cockpit fridge is packed with beer, Mike's & Juice boxes!! I have a portable ice-maker should the need for one ever arise.
 
Good comments, and I've found I agree. When I posted I had only had my 340 for about two weeks or so, and do like a mixed drink as well as beer and wine (hell...what don't i like?!). The reason I'm posting this is I've found my solution: real good ice cube trays made by Rubbermaid. These suckers are hard to find since all the new refridgerators have built in ice makers, but I found them on Amazon.com
They really did make a difference and now I have the best of both worlds!
 
When the ice maker in my aft deck died, I ripped it out and used the space for much needed storage. I have a good 'ol cooler on board and buy ice to keep my beer cold. NOTHING keeps beer colder than good old fashioned ice. A good cooler keeps ice for the whole weekend.

The real answer IMO is what does the Admiral want? If she needs space for food etc, then you need another fridge. No debate.
 
Well I couldn't resist.....I took out the non digital tv to the right of the galley for the berth area (after installing a 32" flat screen on the bulkhead I didn't need the little one anymore) and put in one of those portable icemakers in the space. The toughest part was finding one that fit inside the opening. But I have to admit, it doesn't work as well as I thought and I rarely use it....but at least I have ice when I need it.
 
That is an interesting mod. Did you plumb it in using the 1/4 " tubing fitting or do you pour in the water? Post some pics when you get a chance. I would like to see how it looks.
 
We removed our cockpit fridge and replaced it with a U-Line ice maker as a part of the original purchase when our boat was new. I was a little surprised by the amount of work involved. The size of the two units as slightly different so a locker needed to be modified and some minor plumbing work done. Essentially, one wall of the locker needed to be cut out and a new piece of structural fiberglass needed to be glassed in to make room for the slightly larger ice maker. The dealer removed the trim on the face of the fridge and re-installed that on the face of the fridge to make the swap look factory original. There was also some gel coat touch up required. Tiara now charges about $1,000 extra for the ice maker option over a fridge to cover the extra labor involved in making the modification. I was the first customer to request this on a 32 open, so was not charged for the swap since the labor issues were unknown at the time.
 
I just took my icemaker out this weekend to look behind it up by the helm. It is a pretty deep cavity and even with some dimesions slightly different it does not seem like too bad of a swap. Now of course the fridges cost an arm and a leg!
 
the 95' 330 originally came with ice makers. By the time 340s replaced the 330, no one wanted ice makers here in the north, because when you make ice with your tank water the ice would smell. Also, you never have enough refrig space.

We bought little silicone ice trays that you can bake with at a cooking store... $5 each... They work great...
 
I have a good size fridge in the cabin and icemaker in the cockpit and really like mixed drinks with LOTS of ice. Still would like a fridge in the cockpit to cool mix and/or beer, but not at the expense of the ice maker!
 
Could you post the pictures of the ice maker mod in place of the old analog tv? I'd like to know what model of ice maker you found that fit in there.

My VLPITA ice maker is coming out this year. Either a small fridge or a small portable ice maker is going in its place. Both if I can fit them.
 
This would require a bit of custom work but on my 330, I have the fridge in the galley, the fridge in the cockpit, and the refrigerated drawer in the galley as well. I can fit over two bags of ice in the drawer fridge and if turned to the coldest setting, the ice will stay frozen for days. If you can find a spot for the drawer fridge, it may be a great option for you.
