I decided to give Sea Ray a call about a uscg federal recall notice I got , it seems that the canvas flap covering the opening for electrical components at my helm does not Meet Coast Guard requirements. It is located under the steering column nice size opening. Their answer is to remove the campus flap and put snap covers over the snaps and leaving it wide open just doesn't seem right . What do you think? 2015 19 spx

What's the possible danger?

"The access opening violates US Coast Guard requirement for ventilation of non- ignition protected component possible exposure of bilge flumes non-ignition protected electrical component at the helm may lead to personal injury or death the canvas flap must be removed to allow ventilation of this area "
cant post pic till after thanksgiving but it's right in front of your knees when your sitting at helm. I think it's about 24"x12 opening. You would think Sea Ray would have a better solution

I have the same boat and got the same recall. I was told by the dealer that the only way the coast guard would approve a fix would be for it to be sealed and then you wouldn't have access to the electrical underneath the dash. Seems a little excessive to me that it would present a danger but I don't see the issue with removing it either. I guess water could splash up there but if I get water that far up under the dash the canvas flap wouldn't have done a whole lot and I probably have bigger problems to deal with anyway.

Is this the panel?

Why not replace it with a slotted or screen cover?

If I wanted to fix it right, I would get a latched door made from starboard with slots in it, or a tilt out box like this: http://www.boatoutfitters.com/tilt-out-storage-boxes.html. But really, unless you just hate it, the canvas snap cover is probably just fine, I can't see how ventilation in that area would be an issue, but if you are worried about that, have a canvas shop make a new snap on cover out of screen material. Leaving it off is not much of a solution in my opinion.

Why should I have to fix something on a new boat that's under warrantee that is defective from the factory let's Sea Ray come up with a better solution than just remove it and leave a gapping hole in my dash .

I think in order to meet CG regs it would have to be sealed entirely. From my understanding with speaking with my dealer, the electronic items under the dash are not ignition protected and being and area that fumes could rise up into and not escape, the CG is worried about the non ignition protected electronics from igniting those fumes. Seems like stretch to me but that is the law so Searay has to abide by it. I am not sure what they would use to seal that opening and still allow access to the dash electronics.

No way SR Corporate is reading this. Entry level boat, small potatoes for the braintrust at SR.
I suspect it will be fixed on these boats going forward, not sure if they will do much for already sold boats.

Easy to fix. Cut a piece of plastic slightly larger than the hole. screw it to the underside of
the dash. That way it is covered, and can be removed if needed.

I got a recall on the seat cushion over the cooler. They installed a snap on it to keep it in place tighter.

I have a 190 Sport that was just discontinued when this model came out, interesting enough I have a big trimmed out hole under the dash with no cover and the cooler cushion always moves on me and no recalls on either.

Ouch! Not sure what led to that characterization, but it's not accurate. (Admittedly I was a little slow this week, as I was tied up with family over the holiday.) Anyway, it's true that Sea Ray makes more money on some of the bigger boats, but our heritage is in the smaller day boats. There many, many more people who will experience Sea Ray through our runabouts than will ever own our overnighters. They're all important and they're all part of what makes up the Sea Ray brand and community.
