I had a little project requiring fiberglass bonding to do on my transom. After replacing a transom due to leaking screw holes, I will never drill another hole below the waterline.

I want to add a second transom transducer for a second depth sounder. So, I planned to attach a mounting block to my transom to screw the transducer. I had planned to use good ok’ polyester resin.

Reading another thread, I learned about West System Six-10 Epoxy. Since I have used polyester resin in many, many projects over a decade, I thought I would give this epoxy mix a try.

After shaping and sanding a small piece of 2x4, I pre-saturated the block with polyester resin.

After it cured overnight, I opened the caulk like tube of the Six-10, removed the end cap, squeezed it, spread it, and bonded it. Let it cure for four hours. Lightly sanded it, applied a skin of epoxy, layered a single layer of fiberglass mat in a tab fashion, coated with the epoxy, smoothed it out.

Very easy! Very clean! The epoxy came out mixed properly and of a the proper thickness to spread smoothly.
Now after it cures, I will simply coat it with some white gel coat and the job is done.

I can’t recall what thread I read about this stuff, but thank you to whoever said it. I highly recommend it for smaller jobs.

In the photo, you can see my other transducer. When I rebuilt the transom, I kept the plywood two inches away from those holes. It is all resin/chopped glass near there. In addition, those are through bolts with a backing plate.
