This is my first year with a 2006 240DA. The speedometer has never worked and I look at the GPS for speed anyway. I heard it is common for the speedos to stop working.

Just wondering if anybody bothers to repair their speedometer? If so, is it typically the same issue and is it a simple or complex repair?

Thanks.

there is a small hole on the leading edge of your outdrive lower unit. get a small drill bit and twist it into the hole and pull it out.. you should have a small stream of water come out as the pito tube drains. That should get you squared away

Hey Dpvandy,
Would this small hole be on both lower units on a dual engine Bravo3 set up? Is this something I can do while the boat is in the water?
Thanks...

I made a similiar post a year ago or so when my speedo suddently quit working.
I did have some sand-like particles clogging the hole in the front edge of the lower unit and removed it with a small drill. But it still didn't work.

So, I took the tubing off of the end of the speedometer and using my air compressor, blew it out. My wife stood at the outdrive and could feel and hear air coming out.

Then, just to make sure the speedo itself was working, I reconnected it and blew air into the outdrive hole. It worked great...I was able to get it to read up to around 40mph!

Now it works great in the water, although a little off as compared to GPS...

Just cleaned out the hole on my twin 5.0's Saturday and the hole was on the port (left) side. Other side does not have the hole on mine.
Takes a 1/8" drill bit and I keep one of these approx 4" long (Lowes) on the boat. Can clean it out in or out of the water and do it by hand, have seen guys use a drill when on the trailer but understand there is not much aluminum in the bottom of the hole and do not want to drill through into another area. Twist and pull out wood/material and reinsert repeat until bit spins freely.

Is there a hole like this on a 1995 Sea Ray? If so can anyone tell me where it is located?

Uhhh, hey, you should refer to my post two spots above yours in this thread! :smt021 I have the very same boat! :smt001

I'm a locksmith. What I use that works very well is key extraction tools. Ask you local locksmith if you can buy one. They should be <$8.

I have already tried disconnecting the hose from the back of the speedometer and blowing air through it that way which is why i was wondering if there was a pick up hole i needed to clean out. Can you send a picture as to where the hole is? I saw a hold but it was larger then 1/8" and did seem to have anything in it...definitley nothing sticking out that was clogging it. I stuck a drill but in the hole and it didnt do anything.

Mine will work with the drives trimmed out, but not with the drives down. Must be pinching the hose in the down position.

If you use a small drill bit, say 1/8" or so, if the hole is clean it will easily go in nearly the full length of the small bit. You may not see anything sticking out as the clog will either fill the hole, or be inside it a bit. If I recall, there is only one hole there and it is facing the bow of the boat, right on the leading edge of the lower unit.

I'll dig around and see if I have a photo that shows it, but I can't get you one now as my boat is on a lift with no access to the rear.
