Streaming - rule of thumb for acceptable bandwidth

Have read the Google answers - anywhere from 5mbps to 25mbps?

what’s your experience?

youtubetv, Hulu, etc to TV.

Impatient to experiment.

went to Best Buy, got an apple tv box. Got our floater tv out, hooked it up with an old mifi.

speedtest says 14 mbps.

tv is fine. Everyone else probably knew this already, but learning as I go.

I've always used 12mbps as a baseline to stream HD content.

Yeah, I should clarify, even though 720 is considered HD, I was referring to 1080. 3-5 is about right for 720, 10-12 is typically needed for 1080.

Wanted to watch Tampa bay preseason game tonight. Local market station which has the game is in renewing broadcasting rights for direct tv. Go to the channel and get the screen with the message.

So all I have is streaming in both the house and boat. 4K at the house and 1080p on the boat. I've read and done the math on 4K and it states ~20MBps, that said I haven't seen that for 4K and half that actually works from the streaming services. It could be that they aren't actually supplying 4K but it still looks pretty amazing. On the boat I don't stream 4K but 1080p for live sports and I find any speed between 8-10MBps will do the job. I streamed the NASCAR Daytona race last night on the boat and the speed test was 15-20MBps. But I've done the same with ~8MBps and I see no difference in pic quality.
