So when I start my starboard engine and the radio is on I get a big “pop” from the subwoofer. What could be the cause?

Boat is 1998 370 DA with clarion radio and two off brand amps.

Had a similar issue with my 2 transom speakers from time to time....but not on start up. Removed 2 amps, had them bench tested, replaced 1. Checked all power/ground wiring and every other wire associated with the stereo, stood on my head for 3 days checking everything. Out of frustration I kicked my cabin entry door and the issue stopped for a few moments. Mind you the head unit is mounted nearby. Long story short, a set of RCA cables were barely connected to the head unit and briefly connected when I kicked the door. Returned the new amp and put the old one back in. Made sure all RCA's were tightly connected and zip tied all head unit wiring out of the way.

May be a long shot but worth a check. Mine has been doing it since mid last season and could not figure it out. Every wave I hit....speakers popped or just cut out. Worked one day fine then out for 2 or 3 days. Simple connection issue solved all my issues. Hopefully yours is a simple fix as well. Check the ground or relocate the ground cable to a new location.

I had this issue and it was a bad (original to the boat) amplifier. The other symptom was a static in the background that sounded like bad power/ground. In the end, there Amps were 20 years old and I think the capacitors were starting to fail.

One of two things are the cause of the symptom. Either the head unit's supply voltage is dropping low enough that the voltage on the turn-on is low enough to signal the amp to turn off, thus returning when the load of the starter drops. Or, the voltage on the amp's power cables is dropping too low due to the engine load and the amp cycles off and back on.

Is the STBD engine's battery, also serving as the boat house bank? Port is the main cranking for port and backup cranking for STBD? If so, as a test, fire the port engine, then use the PORT battery to fire the STBD through the switches or COMBINE solenoid. Leaving the STBD bank isolated from the STBD engine's starter draw.

That sounds like a plan. Do you think it could be battery problem? I had issues with port batteries and charger late last year. Was going to do starboard batteries over winter just to have four fresh ones. But got too lazy to carry the batteries up down and out. Easier at the dock.

Battery issue is a slight possibility, but I would expect that a bad battery would show its ugly head will cranking, with or without the the audio being on. Starter draw is way higher then any amp or two.

Ok. Did that. When starting normal the entire head unit shuts down and then restarts. When I use the emergency crossover, it does not and no “pop.” Any solutions to this? Thanks for your help.

So I am thinking check the grounds on the batteries. Maybe swap the new batteries I got last year, for the older batteries. Any other thoughts?
