The Lawn Mower

Cutting a couple of acres here. Here's my JD in my messy basement....

I'm with you Jeff, I have the same JD by the look of it. I have a lot of grass to cut and even with the ride on mower it is a 3 hour job. I have been trying to talk the wife into down sizing but no luck so far.

Ken

I love mine. It is a LT160 with 42" cut. I keep a mulch kit on most of the time, so I cant let the grass get too tall.

Sweet....60" cut?

62".....had a JD 235 garden tractor when we moved here but I have a fairly steep slope in the very front of the property it would not go up. Found this one & bought it before Kim changed her mind....

SHHHH....My wife thinks all riding mowers have 4wd:lol:

Man I am jealous wth all the sweet tractors. Only have a 42" Craftsman from 1996. Still runs like a champ, I can't kill it. Went out started right up, slimed the other rear tire, sharpened the blades and we are rolling for another season..

I hate grass cutting... ... Takes away from boat cleaning...

Toro ZTR 4200 with Kohler 19 HP for me - 3 years and love it.

I bought the mulch kit about a week after I bought her. My last tractor was a Sears lasted 24 years, I waited a long time for it to die so I could buy a JD. Great tractors.

Ditto! Mine is from 1989 and looks new and runs new. I'd still be running a Cub Cadet from the EARLY 60's except my mothers idiot friend accidentally poured kerosene in the tank and overflowed it all over the mower. It subsequently caught fire. That was my favorite lawnmower. :smt013

Here's my WGD (Weapon of Grass Destruction) and as prized a possession as my new Sea Ray. It's a 2002 JD X-485 with All Wheel Steer which gives me a cutting radius of 12" for my tight and hilly 1.1 acres of mowing. I also have a 46" snowthrower for my 300' driveway and a Power Flo Bagger for leaves that come off my 20+ mature oak trees. So unlike the boat this is a year-round toy.

WOW some good news on the life spans of some Craftsman tractors... If I can get one more season after this one then I have manifold money!!!

Great JD all wheel drive tractor. I don't think the wife would let me get that before she gets her Miata... I believe the Miata might be cheaper then that tractor...

I love my JD SST 18! I've had it since '98 and it takes 1/8 of the time that it took with just the Toro walk-behind. More boating time FTW!

The Toro (RTS?) is 16 years old is still needed since the JD is "gravity challenged" on some parts of the properties. The Toro is amazing with first pull starts at the beginning of every season.

I just got a John Deere LA135 from Lowes this week.

I like the machine overall but the first thing I wanted to modify is the brightness of the headlights.

My goal is not to save energy and I don’t understand why others have this goal but I digress. LED's save energy. LED’s look bright when you stare into them but not so bright when you are lighting up a spread out area. LED's are out.

I did find halogen replacement bulbs but I read some topics at a motorcycle forum where the high heat of the halogen bulbs caused the housing around the bulb to melt. So halogen bulbs are out.

The factory headlight bulbs are part number 1156 single element bulb, 12V, BA115 base, 32 candle power, 2.1 amp, 27 watt

I want an incandescent bulb just like the 1156 with the same BA115 base so it’s an easy direct swap with no rewiring. Due to the alternator in the tractor I need to stick to something not over 6.5 amps total or 3.25 amps each bulb.

I went to an automotive supply store and purchased a pair of 1195 single element bulbs, 12V, BA115 base, 50 candle power, 3.0 amp, 37.5 watt.

This is a 56% increase in candlepower.

My issue was the bulb would not fit thru the hole for the socket from the back. The glass lens on the new 1195 bulb is larger than the glass lens on the original 1156 bulb. I had to pop off the clear polycarbonate lens on the front of the hood then pug in the bulb from the front. To do this I opened the hood and pinched 4 clear plastic clips from under the hood, one on each side, two in the middle. It took about a minute to get the lens removed, well, 45 seconds to figure out what to pinch and 15 seconds to do the actual pinching.

I did one bulb swap only then did a comparison. The new 1195 bulb was noticeably brighter then the factory standard 1156 bulb. I swapped the other bulb then reinstalled the clear headlamp lens by pushing it back on until each of the 4 clear plastic clips went 'click.'

I then ran then mower for about another 20 minutes then my mowing job was finished.

All is well and I am happy with this modification.

Presentation,
To be that concerned about tractor headlights, you must mow after dark so not to miss any of the Packer game on Sundays!:smt043

Seriously, the only time I use the headlights on my tractor is when I snowblow the driveway after dark. Other than that I can count the number of times I've used my headlights in 19 years while mowing on on one hand.
