the new house boats here are coming with out water holding tanks and using water purifiers
this eliminates the weight and water getting stale in the tank.

i'm not sure of all the details. talking to some owners this seems to be the typical set up
20 micron pre filter
20 micron charcoal filter
5 micron filter
uv light purifier

my question; has any one out there tried one of these systems? and can you recommend a good brand?

i am going to get one of these but there's not a lot i can find about quality ect. am looking to add in bilge and if works well not carry water in tank any more.
something like this.

Would this be similar to a watermaker on a saltwater boat?
I'd still be iffy drinking water that came out of the marina. Even if I'm only gonna brush my teeth. Now if you were in the north where you can see 20ft down then thats a different story.
Would save a ton of weight though-almost literally in some cases.

no, if i understand salt water, they use distillers.

the water here is pretty clean and i know of folks that drink it out on lake.
also they will pump it through filters and fill water tanks in the winter when the dock water gets shut off. this use is mostly for shower, washing dishes, and th head.
my thought was why not add another filter and the uv purifier and have about the same system the house boats are running.

thats why i wondered if any 4 m members had tried it yet. or maybe if its an option on new cruisers?

Filters and UV Pens are used by backcountry campers and hikers all the time. They work well. So on a larger scale should work on a boat.

i think so to. i'm having trouble pinning down the exact specs and equipment the guys are using.

That matches almost exactly the specs on a RO system I had put into our boat. Water from my main tank runs through this system (3 filters + UV light) and into a small 5 gallon drinking tank. That tank runs to a dedicated tap next to my kitchen sink. We drink that water and I've been told by various people in the water business it is perfectly safe to do so. Note that the water going into my main tank also runs through a dock filter and doesn't typically sit in my main tank very long either, for what that's worth (maybe nothing). If you PM me with an e-mail address I can send you pictures of my setup. A local conventional water filter company did the install, I don't remember the exact brand they used but can find out if you want the details.
