Hi Guys,
I know not many of you have the VP Engines on a 460 from 1999, but I thought I would ask here anyway.

I have the TAMD73P-A engines and the EDC control unit took a dump 2 weeks ago. According to Volvo, they have phased out this part #3826995, and the new part won't be available until end of Oct 2020. ($4,700.00 to boot!!)

So the question is...anybody out there have some secret repair shop that knows something about this little computer? Any work "arounds" or firmware updates that may correct it? Know of any TAMD73 p engines available for parts (LOL).

I hate the boating season in northern Michigan to end this early!!
TIA
Bill

Not looking to spend your $ but this website says they have them in stock...
https://discountvolvopentaparts.com/3826995

just sayin...

Thank you...I will check it out. Some places in the US say they have it in stock, but then you find out they really have to order it from overseas.:) I had nto seen that site yet, so I have reached out and asked if it is readily available...hopefully it is!!!

Just received the email from them:

Everyone is looking for that, Volvo is changing vendors, they say Q4 for availability. I would get an order in rather than wait so you are not at the back of the line when it becomes available and backorders are filling. No one has it.

That's a BUMMER!!

That sucks...

Bill,

My new dockmate is the Volvo service rep in the N GA/Chattanooga area. I'll see him this weekend and ask...

Thanks...that would be great! How they can let the most important part of this engine become unavailable is beyond me.

I’ve had the same conversation with a Volvo engineer that Sabre introduced to me. He supports the manufacturers and he’s in the dark as much as we owners are on the inner workings of the post production parts distribution process. Apparently, the story of no parts being available plays out more often than anyone cares to admit. My issue pre-dated the pandemic, but no doubt that isn’t helping the parts supply chain for you.

There’s a place in Maine I’ve talked to a couple times Marinepartsexpress.com. Have you tried them?

Here’s what got from him.
“I can get one it is 4586 plus tax and shipping

Mike Perkins

I just called and left a message on his cell.
This will be amazing if he can actually get it. I have been turned down all over Europe and the eastern seaboard. There are websites that allow you to order it, but if you call and ask they state it comes from Europe and it is on back order until late Q4.... The craziest thing!

Thank you very much for your assistance, hopefully he really has it and my summer is saved. We had 3 more trips planned until haul out...fingers crossed!

Good morning everyone.

The Volvo Penta EDC is used on many similar engine platforms; I and my small company developed a drop-in replacement for the DH10A variant used in the Railpac aggregate for the railway industry.

We are considering developing a brand new EDC for TAMD and KAMD engines, since they are based on the same platform we already know from the DH10A.

Do you think there is still a market for this kind of product?

I don't know if links to external websites are allowed. If yes, I will share it so you can find all the information on the company website.

Thank you for your feedback.

Good Morning,
I would think there may be but I do know the following:
As of September 2022 I finally received the new EDC directly from Volvo. With all of the emails back and forth over the years and finally months leading up to my replacement, I was told the following. "After building the units to fulfill all of the backorders (apparently there were a LOT), they also built 200 extra to have on hand for future sales."

As you may know, these units are pretty pricey, so having another option for future engine issues would be a great idea.
On another note: There is a company in Norway that I worked with and they are able to rebuild/repair the EDC's even if they are the "potted" versions. They do this for an incredibly good price. (not sure how they can do it so cheap). They were able to fix mine so that we had a spare.

Hope that helps. Message me if you have any further questions.

Thank you for your quick and informative reply, TheWolfTC.

Very interesting information indeed. We will proceed with the development, since the TAMD variant is almost finished and the KAD/KAMD will be our next target.

The EDC we designed also has a few more functions compared to the original:
- More detailed OBD diagnostic functions instead of the limited "blink codes".
- Diagnostic and configuration through RS232: no VODIA needed, just any laptop with a serial port will suffice.
- CAN J1939 and NMEA2000 interface for a direct connection to a modern instrument cockpit.

If there are new functions that you would find interesting, we will work to have them implemented and offer an even more attractive product.

Thank you again.

This would be a welcome addition for sure. "CAN J1939 and NMEA2000 interface for a direct connection to a modern instrument cockpit."

To get the engine data to an MFD I used the products from Yacht Devices. These were simple to insert into the NMEA backbone or Raymarine's Sea Talk Ng. That being said, they only offered the limited data that the Volvo EDC had, so any additional data would be helpful.

Hope that helps.
