won't go into reverse

I just changed the shift cable bellows, I also changed the shift cable as the old one broke, fine and dandy boat doesn't leak anymore, but won't go into reverse, goes into foreward just fine and shifts back to neutral just fine, I did adjust the cable, at first it was "ticking" and adjusted that out but have not so far been able to adjust to go into reverse. Is it simply a further adjustment or could I have put the out drive on wrong?

It sounds like more adjustment is required.

Friend had the same work done on his. He could get reverse but not forward. The mechanic said he tested it out after the repair and all was good.... So on a beautiful Saturday morning, we decided to try to adjust it so he could boat for the day. I am a very practical fixer. I disconnected the upper shift cable and manually shifted the lower cable and linkage into forward to verify it worked. I left it in the forward position, and adjusted the upper cable to fit back onto the bracket with the shift lever in forward. Been working perfect all season now.

Was the shifter in forward gear when you pulled and installed ???
if not the fork for the lower is probably not "timed" properly.
take this from MY experience.
the upper cable adjustment should be at 6"....more than that to make it go in rev...the lower isn't in right.
