Zipper repair in Strataglass front curtains

I never saw this technique used on the lakes in GA, but here's how my FL guy waterproofs zippers. He adds a "flap" of extra strataglass over the zipper on the outside. You'll have to look closely to see it in the pics...I have unzipped and pulled the smilely inside so you can see the flap..

Not a big fan of the flap method. I have seen it done using both clear and canvas flaps and with "smiles" sewn in I still see it as a gutter collecting run off at the bottom instead of letting it shed. It may work a little better on frowns. I still just see a lot sewn on and cut zippers without any finishing.

I have been using the "Sailrite" method which has been giving good results. This puts binding flat on each side. I also find it important to use the transfer/basting tape under the zipper. The gum seems help to seal the stitch holes the same way that it does with canvas.

One more thing... I also advise clients on zipper positioning when closing as the two zippers head-to-head leave an small opening so that is a weak link. Regardless, if you are asking for a hole to be put in something solid it is less than ideal for leak prevention. ;)

kevin,

I respect your opinion. I've been in heavy rains (not intentionally!) and mine never leak a drop. They cover the zipper on the outside.

No disrespect was ever intended against your post. I was just adding my observation from what I have seen. It's also quite possible the jobs I have seen were just not good jobs - many people around here shop on price only.
