Need Dog Help NOW Please

Could be this: Canine Peripheral Vestibular Syndrome. Has many symptoms of a stroke, but has a much better prognosis.

Had a Doberman that had this. Sure looked like a stroke. Falling over, eyes darting side to side, head tilted. It goes away over time, with minimal residual effects.

Good luck!

This sounds like a seizure to me. I am not a vet but we had a seizure dog a while back and it is more common in dogs that I ever knew. We learned that age does sometimes precipitate it, or rather seizures may occur late in life. The quick recovery is also another sign of a seizure and a seizure screws up the brains circuitry so stroke like symptoms are not unusual. But none of that helps when it happens because you have the most helpless feeling in the world.

It is very important that you get the dog to a vet as soon as possible. If you need one tonite, you may have to drive to the beach. I know there are 2 there who have emergency services and we used one over on East 98 a mile or so wast of Harrison, but that has been a few years ago. A proper diagnosis takes a few minutes and some blood tests. Thankfully, seizure dogs are easily treated, but it takes some trial and error to get regulated on phenobarbitol or Valium.

I wish you the best of luck with the old guy...........

Glad he is doing better John - keep an eye on him. I have no idea what the problem is - but had a dog that would get seizures periodically. Never found out why. Your dog's recovery seems similar to seizure, at least in my experiece.

All the best. You know it's so hard when they can't tell you what they are feeling...

How is he today? We are pulling for him.

We had a 10yo Golden Retriever, who passed away. We came home with our kids (3 & 4yo at the time) to find him on the floor taking his last few breaths. He let out one last yelp to acknowledge our arrival and was gone. They are family, not pets.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

A stroke is more likely to affect 1 side or the other (left or right). Sounds more like a siezure. I have a dog that occasionally has seizures. He's over 100lbs so it's quite a scary sight. Vet put him on low dose phenobarbital, and he hasn't had a seizure in 2 years.

Don't forget one of the best vets in the world is on Panama City Beach. Scott McLelland. Hope all goes well. You have one of the smartest, if not the smartest, breeds in the world. Love those dogs.

WOW! When I woke up this morning I certainly didn't expect to get teary reading a Sea Ray post. I just dropped my lab off at the groomer and to see the sad eyes when I left was bad enough. Good luck and keep us posted.

In our prayers,
J

I hate to be the bad guy here but I will because I am also a lover of dogs and have a two year old yellow lab.
If you really love your dog you'll take him to the vet and not ask questions on a boating site.

That would be like someone going on to a vets website and asking a question about boating. so please, do the right thing and get the dog to a vet.

You obviously didn't read the part where John said there were no after hours vets in his area............like many, he has learned to respect some of the members here for more than boat knowledge.

Thanks all. Cosmo is fine today and we have an appointment. I have extensive medical training and my wife is a nurse with 25 years experience. We combined our knowledge with internet research and wanted input from you guys, and that's what we got to make the right decisions for our little family member. Thanks to all.

you did good and it couldnt have been easy to remain calm and work thru it rationally. we're all pulling for Cosmo...

I'm not a vet , but have had enough dogs to know it sounds like he had a stroke. Try to get a children's aspirin in him if possible and call the emergency number for your vet. Sorry!

bad idea... only give ASA if you know for sure it is an ischemic stroke caused by clot. If it was a bleed from a broken vessel it will have a very bad outcome.

Yay for Cosmo! And good job John. IMHO u did a great job in using knowledge, common sense, and avail info to assist u in make clear and concise decisions for ur buddy. And I don't think anyone here ever doubted ur love for the little guy. Glad he is well and hopefully vet will ease your mind.

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. It sounds like idiopathic vestibular syndrome (i.e. doggie vertigo). There's not a lot they can do for this but try to comfort and encourage him/her. Our dog had this and they gave her antibiotics which didn't do much (the vet indicated that was usually the case). Many dogs get over it and may or may not have relapses.

It's not life threatening, but it is typical in older dogs and some get depressed which never helps old age. With our girl, I noticed some flooring (patterns, steps, etc) really gave her a hard time. She'd fall down on the hard kitchen floor, so we invested in rugs and she was OK. Hope this helps and good luck, give her TLC and encouragement.

Best,
Willybgood

Thanks again. Cosmo has been doing well. Just waiting to see if else happens. He spent his first night on our 340 Sat night. He had fun.

:)))))!

No changes. Usually, he acts like a pup, playing with the cats and barking at almost anything. He sleeps a lot, and sometimes he has a little trouble getting to his feet on slippery floors, but he has not had any more episodes. Thanks for asking!
