260 Sundancer Thread.........Comments questions and answers

Re: 260 Sundancer Thread... 260 overnigher and long wringout

Well, we took our first overnighter and first long cruise (long for us) this past weekend.

First - I just love this boat... everything is solid and it takes 1-2 foot chop on Champlain with nary a mention.

Some things to mention/we figured out/or in process of figuring out.

1) Using the front berth for sleeping - the cushions you put on the table do not stay in place for us.. We're thinking of rigging some kind of velcro strap that wraps around the table and connects to the velcro on the back of the cushions. We are both 6' tall and it fits two of us there...it's very roomy compared to our last boat.
I am thinking of putting a little sound deading in the front of the hull as it's like a big echo chamber below the front cushion and any wave slapping is loud (we stayed in the middle of a bay and not in a slip).

The dining accomodations are just so far ahead of our last boat it's hard to say anything but positive things. Fridge gets very cold even on '3', the stove works well for brewing coffee (my camping perk pot).

2) On our long cruise this weekend... we achieved 2.5 mpg against the wind and 2.8mpg with the wind at 3200 RPM (~30mph at ~10.9GPH). It was a very comfortable speed with good trim and handled the 1'-2' chop easily (although down south it was <1'). To us, this is incredible economy for this size boat and weight.

3) We achieved 45.x MPH (GPS) in Mallett's bay (another thing we wanted to see) after scrubbing the bottom. It still wasn't a perfect day for it and suspect we could eek out a bit more on a windless day. Not sure where the tach was at this speed... had to be up around 4600 though.

4) We are seeing the infamous wet spot on the carpet in front of step. Very slight around snaps for carpet runner. Looked under trash can (didn't even know trash can was there until I found mention on this forum) and there was a puddle of water around the sump box. But could not see or feel any leaks. Dried it up and it stayed dry for rest of time we were out.

5) Storage - so far, we've been finding nooks and crannies to store everything. One thing we changed, was taking the cooler out from under the wet bar. It's just too inconvenient for us. We are storing our magma grill there, along with extinguisher, and a few other things. We have a nice stainless steel coleman that we're putting in the back of the boat. It'll keep ice for days in the hottest weather.

The area under the stbd vberth cushion is cavernous... we can fit ALL of our fishing tackle boxes and cases in there. And we have a huge tackle box. Much more space than I thought there was in there.

We found one problem we didn't know we had. The knob that holds/releases the port side seat to make a sunbed is broken off. The knob was in the cabin cabinet and we had no idea what it was for until this past weekend. The end of the bolt is broken off in the seat adjuster. Since it's brass, it should be easy to remove and I'll see if Sea Ray can send us a replacement knob or maybe we can cut more threads in the current one.

6) Lastly, underway, that big 7.4 is economical and great performance...but it does make some noise. Wondering if anyone has done any kind of engine soundproofing and was it effective at all? To me, it seems like most noise is coming from behind the boat (not the engine compartment). but I could be wrong. The bravo III engine exhaust comes out pretty high and doesn't get the benefit of the prop level exhaust of the alphas. That's my simple reasoning anyways. I am all for quiet.. if the engine made zero noise, it would be perfect (smile). So I am not a fan of the go-fast boats with their unmuffled exhausts. If it's a price to pay for the performance, I am still happy, but could be happier if it could be quieter.

That's it for now...

One very happy Sea Ray owner.

Very good Terri
The knob for the seat was missing when I bought my boat. I was able to order it. Also, it's not made of brass and it may be cross threaded. It still should be able to be extracted.

Good to hear you are enjoying the boat!

The v-berth filler cushion will stay put if you stop moving around!:smt001 Obviously, just kidding!

Yes, that knob is not in the best place. You can easily get them from a dealer. I had to do the same thing. I would suggest re-cutting the threads, as you mentioned, as that will make the whole thing a little shorter. The whole problem is it's just too long and easily gets banged.

Glad you enjoyed your first trip, It sounded like our first overnighter also. Exploring when at anchor and finding new things about your new Dancer. After the trip is when you bring out the tools to truely make it your own.

Cruise on!

One more thing on the cushions. When we put them in they seem to want to tent up in the center. We have found that if you pull up the outsides of the cushions they stay down, but still seem to want to slide aft.

The more I thought about this, I realized that our cushions never move. I think it's because we use one of those egg crate pads. That must help to keep them in place.

Hi have really enjoyed all of your comments on the 260 , We had the same problem with the filler cushions moving but we put some of that non slip waffle type of rubber matting under & now no movement at all ! Its just the cheapy stuff that you get in some car shops or some chandlers sell off the roll here in UK. Have had loads of leaks in cabin most of which are now sorted .The most annoying thing is when I go on run for say 1/2hour I get a couple of pints of saltwater in bilge , have repaired a couple of leaks on engine (split hose & exhaust ) but prob persists- not easy to
find cos I am a big old lump ! Also am getting eggy smelling bilge syndrome - sick of cleaning bilge ! have tried all the bilge cleaning products ,disinfectant & bleach but the following weekend it gets all stinky again -but we still love the boat !

Could you possibly have a leaky bellows? What is the smell from or what does it smell like?

My knob screw is brass, and the knob is black plastic. Maybe I do have an aftermarket replacement. It wouldn't bee too hard. What does the original look like? What is it made of? I'd be surprised if it is a hard metal as the track looks like it's aluminum, which would take a beating with a steel screw tightening against it.

Hi, thanks for suggestions on cushions... I believe Dennis said the same thing about the waffle mat. I wonder how many years they left the design this way? Kind of surprising given how well thought out everything else is.

On the bilge smell, we have a very small amount of water in the bilge too, and it doesn't stay 100% dry but the amount of water doesn't seem to change with time. I am wondering if it has come from up front through the normal hull passages in the keel of the boat from that sump area. It looked pinkish like the fluid they use to winterize. I am wondering if I get those areas dried up, if things will stabilize.

When I 'dewinterized it' I basically ran the water in all drains for 45 minutes or so while I had water hooked up. I didn't realize the bathroom drain went into the sump (mine I think has optional grey water processing). I may have overloaded the sump pump and maybe forced water into that area.
A theory.. I guess I will find out. Everything else on this boat seems very tight so far.

Hi Its not leaking when at rest , I leave the boat all week in water at marina & nothing comes in but after I have been on a run I turn on bilge pump and get some water pumping out. The boat came from Florida & bilge was filthy when I got it . The bilge gets flushed out every week but the next time I use it the water becomes murky & gets soft black bits in it & will start to smell like bad eggs . I think there is some kind of bacteria in the bilge which may have been caused by the heat & lack of maintainance in Florida ? I am going to take my wet & dry hoover to boat & completly dry bilge out & then slot some cardboard under engine & run it to see if any drips show up - need to stop saltwater coming in as must be aggravating the situation Would love to get this sorted as the smell is quite nauseating at times !

Another point to mention:

One other thing (an earlier mystery) we found, is that there was a 'pump like' sound during and after I shut off the water during de-winterization even after I turned off the power (main switch). It would only stop when I opened the waste cap (don't ask me why I thought of this) and it seemed to let pressure off (either suction or pressure not sure which) and then shortly after the pump stopped. So I am wondering if the prior owner ever replaced the charcoal filter in the vent line. I am wondering if mine could be clogged, causing the fluid not to pump from the sump to the holding tank, and instead having some be forced into that sump area through an unnatural path that wouldn't normally happen if the sump was working normally. I only realized it was the sump pump after investigating the wet carpet (mystery solved)..as I didn't realize it was even there.

Where can I find a list of parts for the 260? Is there a good online place or do I need to see the dealer? I need a new horn and cabin light cover.

THanks,

THanks,

The sea ray site, under customer service, has a page you fill in your name, address, etc, then it takes you to a place to download a complete parts listing for your boat. Very handy. They have the same thing for owners manuals, etc.

You need to tell us what year you have. We're not mind readers.

Send me a PM with your e-mail. I'll email you a PDF I have of my year.

You know, I always assumed my seat knob was brass (or bronze?), too. It has that "brassy" color, but maybe it's just a coating? I don't know, never really looked at it any closer.

Could your holding tank or vac tank be leaking? Based on what you wrote, that would be my first guess. Especially when you mentioned the "black bits".

If you've cleaned under the engine, the only other thing I can think of is the cavity around the fuel tank may be cruddy.

It could be brass I suppose but I think it may just be a nickel coating. I haven't looked at it in awhile.

Todd, mine is definately brass, but different years or replacements might be different. It would not seem prudent to user a harder metal on an aluminum track as it would really make a mess of it as this bolt just presses against the track to hold it in place. Brass is commonly used for such applications as it's soft and does a good job of grabbing without damaging.

Wow, for that kind of smell, I'd definately be looking for a leak in your waste system. I am not sure what else would cause that kind of smell. What if you do a pump out, and rinse with treatment (process documented in the manual). And then don't use the system while doing a test run. This might tell you if the issue is the holding tank or parts of that system. Do you know if your vent filter is good? Can you get to it to pull it out and check it?
