454 Mercs Stern drive
I am looking at at 310 sundancer with 350 mags and inboards or a 340 with 454s and inboards. The 310 is extremely clean and the 340 needs some work. Will I be disappointed if I choose the smaller boat.

In general pick the boat that has the features that you want at a price that works. The longer the boat the more the slip costs, etc. But there's not much difference between 310 and 340.

It depends on the model years, but I like the 310 from 2010 on. Prior to that, it's the current 330' which is a nice boat as well.

I also think it depends where you'll do your boating. Ie will you be traveling longer distances or just day cruising.

The 310 is a 1999 and the 340 is a 2001.
I have a 50' slip, so either one will fit just fine.

340! Stable beam, more room, not much more for gas really. They are both fuel injected ,correct. The 310 from 89 on are smaller than my 86 300.

Is the 310 an I/O boat and the 340 v-Drive? If so, there are a lot of things to consider with that difference too.

Both are V drives
The 310 is in immaculate condition except for a blown head gasket on one engine, so I cannot take it for a sea trial. The price reflects the condition.
The 340 needs one of the engines rebuilt, a new generator and some general cabin work due to sun damage. This one has to be bought without a sea trial.
This boat has a great price due to condition. I just want to make sure that I don't regret buying the smaller boat since it is in such great condition.

I'm in the process of fixing up my fixer-upper.

My next boat won't be a fixer-upper. I'll just save money until I can afford what I want, and how I want it.

The prices are attractive on the front end but it's more expensive in the long run.

Plan C! Go with a 340 but don't think about buying that one that is in disrepair without a sea trial! There are many, many nicely maintained 340's on the market. Don't limit your search to boats close to home. This is a purchase whe the right boat may be 2,000 miles away.

Willie o has a nice pair of 454 from a 91 310 for sale.

My brother in law is selling a mint 1995 searay300 it is on creigslist ny it is located in southold

You could eat off the bilge floor on this boat he spends more time cleaning then cruising . Price is rite if you want to take a look

Agree wholeheartedly with the 340 and fact there are many used/good running 340s on the market to buy. I went from a '06 300 to a '08 340 and the difference was like night and day. Too many advantages over the 300/310 to not go with the 340, in my opinion. You can also get a really good and excellent 340 now for a decent price.

My 2001 310 only had 350 hrs on both engine when the first engine blow a head gasket between 4-6 cyc. after $ 8200.00 later replaced with a reman 350 , 2.2 hrs later the other engine had a blown head gasket between 2-4 cyc it also was replace . be careful about head gasket problems they have problem with water ingestion into cyc

Ryan--
Thanks much! We're certainly looking forward to the upcoming boating season. I love the sound of diesels in the morning--it sounds like victory (in convincing the wife to buy a bigger boat)!

HA! Say hi if you get that beauty up to DC.

Ryan--
Will do...hope to make several trips to the Georgetown Wall and Three Sisters this year...we usually have a German Shephard on the boat--if you see a 44 DA with "Schatzi" on board, stop and say Hi...

Both the 99 310 and 01 340 had poorly designed exhaust systems when they where manufactured... My 340 had both engines replaced due to water injestion in the first year of ownership. At that time the newly designed exhuast with a vacuum break was added. There a still many 310s and 340s that have the original exhaust design. I would not buy a either boat if they have the original exhaust design. The room difference between the two boats is minimal. The 1998 310 had a funky cabin layout, which was changed in '99. If I where you, I would first make sure the new exhaust system were added. They I would buy the newer 340 if it can be brought up to the your standards without greatly exceeding the costs of 310. I would make the purchase contingent on a sea trial and survey, for either boat...
