340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Thanks Carter,
I've seen the pictures but haven't ever been aboard a 340da. Hard to judge the space to stand in, in front of the sink.
In my 240da I can fit in the head but, even getting the door closed is next to impossible. I have to go out in the cabin to change my mind.
I bathe in the water behind the boat, and rinse off with the transom shower. It would be nice to shower in private sometime.

Island,

I understand your feelings on the head in the smaller cruisers. We just moved up from a 05' 260 and I was in the same delima you are in. One foot in one foot out. Anyway I'm 6'2" 250 and the head in the '03-'08 340 has quadruple the room and you'll be able to stand and turn freely while showering.

I,am 6'2" 300lbs Its a little tight getting in and out but no problem showering once your in. Definitely more comfortable to sit once you get use to it. The only problem is drying it out after each use if you don't want to wait for it to dry.My boat is a 2000 340. I'am not sure if the 2003 1/2 or newer is bigger. Rich

Anyone know, how in the hell, to get the spark plug wire retaining clips off of the wires. I'm trying to replace the wires and for the life of me, can't get those dam clips to release / open :smt013 while I sit here nursing the hole in my thumb from using a flathead to try and pry them off. :smt100

A 1999 340 with 5.7 small blocks?

Great thread, just spent 2 hours on it. And also went to Dale's blog on his resto. AMAZING!!

Has anyone heard of a 340 being equipped with 5.7's? Even if they were the MAG 350's I am thinking the boat would be underpowered. I am waiting on answers to questions on the power, was the boat re-powered, if so, why. What is the performance with the engines. Even with weight savings vs. 7.4's I suspect the engines would need to operate at near WOT to hold plane.

There were indeed the 350 MAG MPI's. I have yet to find another with these engines. My concern would be torque vs. the big blocks.

I have seen them with 6.2s, but not 5.7s... The 5.7 MAGs put out 300HP vers 310HP for 7.4 MPIs. Since they weigh less, the boat should not have a problem planning.

When I was doing research - only engines available for 2003 - 2008(?) was either 6.2 or 8.1. Has been quite abit written on this forum discussing the differences. I passed over a couple of nice boats with 6.2's - to find one with 8.1. I felt the boat needed the larger motor - just my opinion.

I am looking at the hurley H2o Davits for a 2006 340. I was told Ineed the 10 inch h2o. Does anyone have any insight, picts or used these on a late model 340.

I seem to be losing fresh water somewhere. I fill the tank up (40 gallons) and sometimes it is okay and other times I just lost 20 gallons of water and all I did was wash my hands a few times. When the fresh water pump is one. The whine of the motor can be heard several times a minute even though no water is being used.

I was in the water behind the boat and I had my wife turn on the pump for the transom shower to work. Water started pouring out if a small hole under the swim platform. The manual says it is a water heater discharge. Why would the water heater be discharging water?

Maybe the pop off valve is stuck open

If its stuck open then its not filled to capacity ? Could this cause damage to water heater over time while its trying to heat only half filled or 3/4.?

BINGO! Bruce. I had the mechanic over to look at something else and he noticed the valve was driping and he assumed it is stuck open too. We left Ko Olina on the west side of oahu with a full water tank and arrived at Waikiki three hours later bone dry.

@ Fruition

we didn't have the water heater on. The water was being heated off the engines.

Where does water drain out/to from the aft cockpit seating storage areas? I'm away from the boat for a month and can't look myself. I'm considering insulating the aft-most storage area to be used as a fishbox IF it drains directly overboard.

Thanks.

If you look in your hatch where the shore power is connected, it does drain through there (sometimes) but mostly on your starboard side there is a little weep hole that it drains out of. That little hole is in the bend in the aft cockpit seat and it's shaped like a little track to allow for wash down and draining. If there's water to the port side, it just drains out of the transom door area by the handheld shower rinse thingie. Hope that helps.

Bruce that really helps!

Man I wish I could spend more time with the boat so I could get to know it as well as you do. Now that you mention that little track hole I can see it in the bend just as you say. Well your report has lifted my spirits further. I've been pretty bummed about this boat, as great as it is, and couldn't figure out why. We were in Naples this weekend and had a great time cruising around but something was missing. I still have the walkaround in dry storage and started talking about taking it out the next time down and my wife said she thinks I'm missing the fishing part. You might recall we were first looking at the sportsman model of this same boat, but that deal fell thru.

The present plan then is to make this 340 as fishable as I can without a great deal of expense. I have several high-quality clamp-on rodholders for the rails...not my favorite idea...which I'll see how they do in March trolling big Mann's and Bomber CD's. I've already spent that money but the better option is 4 gunwale-mounted rodholders, like a real boat. :) Also, I don't want fishguts and blood all over the seats so I'm making King Starboard covers for the seat base using the seats as patterns. Stow the seats in the cabin while fishing, put on the covers (held in place with velcro strips) and now I have a solid surface to cut bait, flop fish, tie rigs.... Except when tipping jigs with shrimp I almost always troll lures and spoons so a baitwell isn't necessary. The only real drawback is not being able to lean against the gunwale while bringing in a fish, except for the port side behind the step. I'm using 3/4" starboard and I'm thinking about making a piece in the shape of the aft sunpad filler cushion thus making the sunpad area a casting platform.

If I insulate an area I'll simply use 1" thick styrofoam sheets velcro'd to the sides. I typically keep the ice in bags anyway so I'm just looking for a little extra insulation. Besides, I catch and release almost everything, maybe keeping enough for two dinners. For that matter I could just carry-on a cooler but it would get in the way.

Thanks again Bruce, the dream lives on. :smt115

The only thing that would concern me is that a of your shore power connections are in there. So when washing it down after I would just take care to watch that area. When drilling the gunwales for your rod holders be sure to check for any wiring.

Thanks Zorba. It sounds like I should wash down the storage to see if water goes into that area. And excellent thought about the rodholders. Thanks!

I think it's just a minimum amount of water that flows through there. The aft cockpit seating sectional is bolted through the hatch. I have seen very little amounts of water come through there. So with that said, I don't believe it would pool in the aft hatch.
