420 DA - New AGM's - 11 Volts?

So I stay in compliance, I have missed this posting about new rules? So? Would someone provide me with the link to these new rules?

Thanks

Never mind, I found it 9 people bickering

 Whose bickering? I certainly do not believe I have been, but in this damnable era of being PC (Politically Correct) who knows? God! How I hate that term. [I guess I can say GOD?]

I hope I am not considered one of the nine?

Have a good day all, bye!

Be careful Frank. The new rule invoked yesterday states that you can no longer disagree with anyone or you'll be banned from CSR. You can only present a solution and can not interpret or comment on someone else's posting regardless of how bad it is.

Just for clarification the new rule from the head monkey does not state you can not disagree with anyone. In fact it suggest that what Frank did & Gary what you did by posting the manual is correct and how it should have been handled, if you see someone post something that is incorrect or dangerous like in some of the past examples, post what you think is correct and then let someone else support it or disprove you, etc. What is not acceptable any longer is a 12 page thread saying that who ever posted the first thing is a dip-stick because they like to wear red, white, and blue shoe laces. Nothing wrong with disagreeing or correcting someone else, problem is personal attacks. It got old and head monkey threw down his hammer (personally I think he lost a $12K sale because someone reported a posting and Richard and I were on the road and he had to handle it). Again even if you get kicked off your penalty will expire and you will be back in a couple weeks to try it again. We are all adults and should be able to act like it.

At the end of the day this should make us a happier home and any true trolls should disappear.

Also, if you turn the battery switch off while the engines are running, the excitation current in the field coils may surge over exciting the coil. The battery acts as a current reservoir accepting excess current or supplying it as required. Without the battery in the circuit, the overly excited alternator's field would over excite the stator windings. That power spike would then feedback into the field windings further exciting things though the internal connection between the input and output stages. Last thing you want is an overly excited alternator on your boat!

See "Excitation circuit" in your factory service manual for more details
No, sorry. There is no subliminal message in this posting. This isn't the hidden message that you are looking for. Noting here to see folks. Move along. Move along.
Best regards,
Frank

Do you want the alternators humping your leg the next time you're in the engine room because you turned off the battery switch at the wrong time?

I didn't think so Mr Smarty Pants.

I just think your exciting description sounded like something from a sex education class... sorta like an alternator orgasm or something.

There has 'got' to be subliminal message in that post somewhere?

Does an alternator usually smoke after an orgasm?

Like my new signature? Adds a little something to the thing....

:smt043:smt043:smt043I can actually read that....:smt043:smt043:smt043

OK....now come clean....how many of you highlighted that post to see if there was a hidden message in it....admit it!!!!!

I can't believe the amount of abuse that I'm taking over this very, very serious issue. Wah! Mommy! Mommeeeeeeee!

Thanks for all the input- but would disconnecting the battery switch cause the alternator to stop working altogether? Remember, i am still running at 10.6 volts. What could potentially cause this? Marina wont take responsibility so i plan to have them tested when they are replaced.

If you mean disconnect the battery switch such that your engines were running and the battery circuit was open, then yes... that will destroy your alternators (or cause them to orgasm per Frank C.).

What if the alternator has a jimmy hat?

It is pretty common knowledge around here that the 450 and 450CE weak points are the alternators and the sherwood water pumps. I replaced both alternators on my 04 420DA within a couple weeks of each other. One theory was that the alternators were not beefy enough to handle the pre heater coils. We disconnected the pre heaters and I had no more issues. Disconnecting the pre heaters may not be a good idea if you live in a cold climate.
