420 DA Thread

Thanks for the reply , my Surveyer did a search , and it’s alway been up her lake Erie fresh water , he says
Doesn't look salty to me. The spots of corrosion could be something like clorine bleach residue, or caustic battery material. The brown on the wiring is not corrosion, it's Soft Seal.
He also surveyed the boat for the second owner when purchased ,
WHAT'RE THOSE VALVES , IN THE FIRST PICTURE , Is there anything I need to know or look for and this particular model I’m considering a purchase.
I don't know what those things in the first picture are for but they look like manual cables. Being that they are mounted at the helm the first thing I wonder is if they're manual emergency shut offs or something like that. I'd track the cables to see what's at the other end.

I just found out from the owner/dealer that those things at the helm are trolling valves. I kind of thought they looked like some kind of valve but I’ve never seen them installed there at the helm , I don’t know if they were factory installed a dealer installed but they do look like they were professionally installed
Again thanks for all your help and information if there’s anything else very important that I need to look at on this particular model I would greatly appreciate it I think the biggest thing is to have the engines and mechanicals surveyed/sea trialed by the Cummings dealer
thanks again

Hey @Mightychan (and @Jaybeaux and @Lovichka 420 DA ) I happened to be out at the boat today and had to go down there to check something. Here are my stats:

Open: 70 seconds
Close: 35 seconds

Has anybody ever timed how long it takes their Atwood hot water tank to finish heating (e.g. the amount of time from when the hot water breaker is turned on until the Amp draw goes back to zero?).

Timed mine this weekend:
Open: 66 seconds
Close: 31 seconds

Hey all, I got the itch and looking to go from my 32 DA to a 42... main differences between the 42/44 and any recommendations or advice about what to look for option/motors on the 42 and any helpful advice would be appreciated, Thinking about moving up in the spring! Thanks in advanced!!

Hey @Grosen - The main cosmetic difference is in the shape of the side windows in the salon (the 42 has horizontal oval/diamond shape - the 44 has 3 vertical oriented windows).

The standard propulsion are twin gas Mercruiser 370hp

Optional upgrade:
Gas - twin MerCruiser 410hp
Diesel - Cummins 417hp
Diesel - Cummins 446hp

I have the “standard” - *wish* I had the upgrade - as the power/speed is not always there...

Another difference between the 420 and the 44 is the salon TV is mounted on a roll out shelf above the microwave on the 420. On the 44 it drops down from the ceiling above the galley sink. Also the 420 has mechanical diesel engines where the newer 44's have electronic controlled diesels.

My 2005 420 has the TV that drops down from over the sink...

Hoping to close on our “new to us” 2006 44 tomorrow. She has QSC500’s. Sea-trial was awesome. Coming out of a 330DA with 5.7s, the power at cruise was extremely nice, but handling around the dock was night and day. That little gasser was a bit of of b*tch to dock in the wind...

‘Have about a 100 mile run to bring her home in the coming days. Will have a lot more feedback and pics soon....

My 420 is a 2004 and has the salon TV mounted on the shelf. I thought that changed when the 420 became the 44. I stand corrected.

You can absolutely get green surface corrosion on a freshwater only boat. Mine had it when I bought it off of Lake of the Ozarks and it was 100% verifiable that it lived there it's entire life of 5 years. It cleaned right up. So not saying your boat has or hasn't been in salt but just that the green corrosion isn't proof one way or the other.

Welcome. Looking forward to pictures of the boat and your journey home.

That actually changed in the 2005 interior upgrade when it was still a 420. They went to the flip-down design coming out of the ceiling.

OK - answered my own question - the Attwood water heater takes between 35-36 minutes to heat up a tank of water (e.g. from completely cold start). I wanted to know this because sometimes while on the hook, in the morning I'll run the generator just long enough to heat up the hot water - then shut it down so I can enjoy some peace and quiet.
I tried this test last night. After 50 mins, the amp draw was still elevated and I got tired of waiting. Plenty of hot water.

I appreciate the feedback, yeah deff going to go with the Cummins I’m done with gas motors lol

LOL.... what are you guys doing with all these times?.... and for the record Jaybeaux went premature... the gage wasn’t there yet :)

Do you have to buy the display, or could he use the MFD to display and control the auto pilot? I think he could just purchase the pump and computer, etc, right?
On the other hand, it’s only 650$, and after 4K, plus install, might as well do it right?

I actually had a 4" GMI 20 display installed as well, used it to fill the hole left by the old Raymarine VHF speaker. I'm not sure if it can run an autopilot or not. I was going to use it to display rudder angle, and other side items but the old rudder angle sensor wont show up on the N2K network... yet another project... In either case an autopilot is way down the future upgrade list!

Installer is recommending I upgrade the rudder sensor to a Raymarine M81105 Rotary Rudder Sensor along with a Garmin GRA 10 Adapter to get rudder angle onto the N2K. I'm just not sure how to install the M81105. Trying to decide if I can tackle it myself and save some $$. We'll see... researching...

Edit: After looking at the manual it looks like those with the autopilot may already have a similar type of sensor installed. If anyone near their boat happens to remember and could snap a few photos of the installation, it'd help me out. Should be on the port side rudder.

In other news: We had a productive few days at the boat this past weekend:

I replaced the Main Engine Raw Water Intake hoses. For those wondering, I ordered 30ft of hose and had plenty. Ended up with about 4-5ft extra. It's an easy, though semi tedious job, about 2 hours or so. Don't forget to grab some zip ties with eyelets for mounting to the stringer to re secure the hose!

Also, I got those stupid expensive forward deck hatch risers from TaylorMade replaced. Not the easiest deal, involved drilling out the rivet holding the hinge together on both the old and the new. I then used a stainless screw, washer, and locknut to re-secure. Works like a champ and we have a functional hatch again!

Next, I replaced all 4 lenses on the 4" gauges at the helm, which were yellowing and cracking. I used the DIY kit from GaugeSaver.com found on eBay. He has excellent reviews, and they look great! About an hour and half to do carefully do all 4 of them.

Finally, ordered a replacement Sea Ray Monitor panel from the local dealer.. $822... ouch. On the way to having everything fully functional again!

Can you share the part number you used for intake hoses

I just used the same hose that was previously installed:

MPI Series 100-1140 1 1/4" ID Marine Hardwall Hose

You may want to check your boat to ensure it's the same size. I also replaced the Air Conditioner Raw water hose as well, it was MPI 100-0340 3/4" ID. But you only need about 4ft or so of that one.

I'll plan on doing the generator down the road. It looks like a short run of 1" between the seacock and the strainer (not sure why there is a size difference), then a long run of 3/4" to the genny.

what is the Sea Ray monitor panel?

It's this little 2 line LCD bastard...
Systems Monitor.jpg

This thing will forever be on my $hit list along with those TaylorMade Hatch Risers... stupid expensive for what it is.

Do you have the Sea Ray part number for the Monitor?

I'm with you that $800 for that crappy piece of junk is a total rip-off. I just hate not having it work.

Yeah, same as me. Irritated me that it wasn't working.

I don't have it in front of me, but my local dealer is a Marine Max and the parts gal there was able to quickly look it up. Once it arrives, I'll see if there is a Sea Ray part number on the box and post it up for ya.
