420 DA Thread

From what I know (I'll have to ask my electrical guy) they all have AGM settings. It appears the differences are the charge current and number of fully rated outputs. If you have two or three battery banks then it seems their Centaur series would be applicable. I'm a bit different in requirements from your application; I have two Victron Quattro inverter/chargers; not installed yet and a Phoenix inverter currently installed and in use.
Thanks !!
I have bank of three AGMs on Port and two on Starboard.

@J.Wilt If your set up is like mine then you have 3 banks. 1 bank of 2 batteries on the Starboard, 1 bank of 2 batteries on Port (forward 2 batteries) and 1 bank of 1 battery on the Port for the generator (aft most battery Port side).

It’s done.... not a fun project but it’s done

I will be having a lot of questions on this model.. I can't get to the boat this weekend but know the stbd batteries need to be replaced.. Does anyone know off hand the location of the stbd engine start batteries?

On my 2004, they are against the Stbd hull, forward of the Holding Tank, aft of the water heater. Mine are mounted perpendicularly to the centerline of the boat.

My ac pumps seem to not be working while underway. I can see it pumping while idling but after a cruise there is no more water pumping out. Air still works though. I have to turn off all of the ac switches and then turn them back on for it to work properly again. Has this happened to anyone?

Also- the pumps just turn on and off while the boat is at the dock. Is this normal? I’m new to this boat and my last one never did this...

The AC pump only runs if one or more of the AC's is actually cooling or heating. Other wise the water pump is off.
So the pump is supposed to cycle on and off while the ac is running? It’s not like I’m turning my ac on and off...

The water pump cycles on and off with the compressors.

Thanks Bennett.
I was concerned that I was going to burn my ac out when I saw no water pumping out while my ac was blowing. It just kicked on again as I’m typing this. My old boat never did such a thing...

What is the standard battery lay out.. From what I can tell I currently have 3 group 31 on the outside of the port engine 2 group 27 between the engines and 2 group 27 on the outside of the stb engine.

Starboard should be 2 parallel group 31's for Starboard Engine Start and Electronics
Port is 2 parallel Group 31's for Port Engine and House loads, plus one group 31 for generator strart.

Center batteries are 2 group 31's in series for 24v bow thruster.

The port and starboard batteries are on a 3 bank charger, the bow thruster is on its own 24v charger. Both chargers are located on port side one, behind the couch, one behind the vacuum cleaner, both can be seen by pulling the tray out of the triangle at the salon steps.

The QSC needs IIRC about 950 MCCA, most decent wet cells are at least that, AGM's are usually well over 1100 MCCA.

@Zach312 - here is a diagram showing the layout:
  • B - starboard batteries
  • D - bow thruster (wired in series - on my boat the PO moved them to near the center
  • U - port batteries
  • V - generator battery

Now there's a man that sounds like he knows a 420/44.
How's the 58 doing?

Which battery bank feeds the house on our boat? I am guessing starboard. The reason for my question:

We recently replaced our 4 engine cranking batteries. Since then, I have twice run down the starboard side so low that the starboard engine would not crank. This was on mild days when we did not have the genny running. This never happened with the old batteries (how frustrating is that). Around the same time, I noticed that my fridge and freezer are not keeping cold on 12V. They work fine on genny or shore power, but not on 12V.

I am guessing that one of my new starboard batteries is weak or bad, and can't keep up with the current draw of the fridge, freezer, lights, and stereo. The old batteries (6 years old when replaced) handled that load fine and would fire the engine up without hesitation.

Note that I *always* combine both battery banks (emergency start) when starting the engines.

Thanks, all.

Port should be for the house loads, at least it was in 2007.

No need to guess, the main breakers are on the panel on the port side of the engine room bulkhead. One side of the panel is port, the other side is starboard. I think you will see one breaker on port labeled Main Cabin, that feeds the panel and everything on it in the cabin. The starboard side will have one labeled control center, that feeds the fuses and bus bar at the helm.

For the fridges, are they getting 12v power to them from the panel?

How's the 58 doing?

I replaced all the batteries twice in my ownership of our 44DA, and the chargers as well.

The 58 is coming along will post soon on some of the progress. Hoping to have it home by mid June.
