**CAVEAT: This is a single data point, and uncorroborated by me riding with this Sea Ray Owner**

Kristyn, the boys and I spent a week at Coles Point Plantation (aka 'Redneck Riviera") on the lower Potomac River this past week. We were berthed next to an '08 44DA with QSBs and Zeus Drives. Per the owner, his is one of 6 or so Zeus equipped Sea Rays on the east coast. Not a happy man. Nothing but problems with the Zeus drives. Key quotes from the older gentleman with the Zeus 44 Dancer:

"I bought it to work on it. (grins) the @#*&#$%% Zeus drives shut down after two hours of use. They will not hold their lubricating fluid, and when the system detects low fluid, it shuts down the QSBs....like today when I was trying to back into my slip after a two hour run. Port shuts down and I get an error code, an error code which is all proprietary, so I have no idea what the error code means until I call a Cummins Mercruiser Rep, get him out of bed, and they fly in and tell me what the problem is"
"The boat will run 40 MPH..when it runs"
"This is one of the very few with QSBs and Zeus--after this one, Sea Ray began fitting QSCs with the Zeus in the 44DA-I asked Sea Ray why I got the QSBs as my only option...they gave me 20 grand and told me to keep my mouth shut"

So-I suspect some of this is a bit of a stretch, but this is one unhappy Zeus owner, who, knowing the dealer on the Occoquan river like I do, probably paid top dollar for this boat. His boat was sitting in the slip a whole lot more than it was running last week/weekend.
His wife was sitting in the cockpit looking mightily pissed off while we looked into his ER....

He asked me what I was running in Truly Blessed II, and I said 6CTA 8.3 M3 450s-simple, reliable, smoke a little when they start up cold, mechanical diesels. He smiled and said "yup, Sea Ray got that one right"

This was a Sunday morning conversation over a cup of coffee while I peered into his ER.

Clearly not a happy guy, and perhaps stretching the truth a bit on the 20K for hush money.

As for me, I am sticking with my old school "runs when I want her to run" boat.

Again, for the Mercruiser Early Technology Adopting Zealots, this is a single data point.
Y'all help Merc get that Zeus thing perfected so I can buy a 2011 52 DB in around 2014 with QSM 11s and de-bugged Zeus Drives.

I wonder if Sea Ray still offers the 44 with the QSB's? Zeuse or not, I can't imagine those high strung QSB's (Dodge Cummins Truck engine derivatives) having sufficient torque to move such a large boat especially at 40+mph.

I am told that the initial Zeus drives were built around the B series Cummins block. Later versions may have more engine options. The 44DA w/ Zeus is only available with QSB engines, but they squeeze up to 480 hp out of them.

This isn't Dodge truck derivative. The 6B Cummins is a very old engine and has been around forever. The QSB is an electronic version of the 6BTA. I am not a Zeus fan because I don't trust new Mercruiser products as far as I can throw them. They have a real history of rushing good, but seriously unproven designs to market so unsuspecting early adopters can pay for doing their prototype evaluations. The problem I have with the Cummins is that the QSB is a relatively low torque engine and gets its hp at higher rpms.........they are great engines, but in smaller boats running at lower rpms. They would not be my choice engine in a 25,000 lb cruiser.

Besides, the Zeus option is nose bleed money...........QSB's w/Zeus drives is a $160K option over standard power. Give me the QSC's and v-drives any day of the week.

I saw a 44 with the zeus drives back in march of 2007 in Charleston SC when they were experimenting with the drives breaking away from the hull in the event of a underwater impact. My concern with this setup is the catastrophic damage done to the fiberglass hull if you hit something. The test boat was really suffering what I would describe as un-repairable damage. The drive was not shearing cleanly from the hull and was taking a good part of the hull with it. It just seems like alot of EXPENSIVE metal hanging underneath that boat.

Frank W... I am always amazed at your depth of knowledge on a broad range of topics. I have been a component supplier to Cummins for a number of years...alot of parts going to the B series and you are right on the money again. I know we have a Zeus part or two and this thread has me a bit interested in the volumes we have sold so far. Keep up the informative posts

Dan-so we can order OEM Cummins Parts from you with a CSR discount?
Help the brothers out!
My good and dear friend from Williamsburg seems to always be breaking things-but again, that is what happens when you use your boat.

hey... I just did over 1500 NM and only had a shaft seal hose go bad... Of course I won't discuss the bevy of parts I had to replace right before the trip.

They ain't making QSM-11's anymore... you'll have a hard time doing that in 2014.

Zeus failures? No! Ask me if I'm surprised. Go on! ASK!

Merc can't get anything right in year one.
or two
or three
Maybe by sixth or tenth year it'll be as good as the other guy's stuff. Or not.

Best regards,
Frank C

Frank, now you know that Gary's going to ask you...in a Gary sort of way no doubt....
